Default couple questions plus 500 hp monster pics

i did a compression check today the results were 155, 90, 155, 160. i poured alittle oil in the low one and the number went up to 175, so i am guessing the rings are shot. the question i have is, this is a built motor, arias pistons, scat rods, etc. all assembled by a trained engine builder, the thing was built last september and has been running a rock solid 7 psi, it is however untuned but i spent many hours street tunning it with a wideband, datalogging, and uberdata. boost is always 12 to 12.5, why would my rings be shot? should i contact the engine builder? how much time is need to replace the rings? can it be done with the motor in car?

now for the beast, i get some serious sh*t for driving a 4 banger (dads car)

71 nova

looks mean coming down the street

functional wheelie bars

sexy

baller status

thanks guys

Id contact the engine builder, order new rings, and do it all over again.

It could have been worse (bearing failure).

Also what was your timing at?

even if you contact the engine builder he will not do anything. He will blame it on your tunning.

the rings might be ok, but probably not.....
was the engine completely warmed up when you did the test?

was the throttle wide open when you did the test?

were all the fuel injectors unplugged, or was the ecu unplugged?

what compression is the engine supposed to be? if its in the 8's, 150-165 should be good...

but that 90 is a bad number...but not undriveably bad.. that ring set might not be seated that well. i've heard of people actually pulling the head and scuffing the cylinder lightly with a scotch brite pad, and "re-breaking" in the engine...and sometimes it works..

good luck..

the engine was warm and it was at full throttle, the weird thing is in never ever blow smoke, the first time it did blow smoke was after i put oil in the cylinder

if it runs good, doesnt smoke, and is fun to drive, just drive it.

take another compression test reading in 5000 miles or so.... it might be fine.

if your gonna re-ring it, wait a while IMO....see if it seats itself well. if its running fine, just roll with it.

thats what i was thinking but i want to turn up the boost and get it tuned i dont know if i want to do that with bad rings

isnt always the rings, it could be a bad valve. but then again after the oil was added it does lean towards bad rings.

well a burnt valve can cause bad compression tests too. check for blow by, but that can also be associated with bad rings.

is there anyway to tell if it is the rings besides pulling it apart? the head was completely rebuilt so i would hope it isnt a bent valve, could it need a valve adjustment?

bad rings one cylinder will have a really off cp # from the rest, 2 you may see blue smoke come out the tail pipe(burning oil). or if you dont see blue smoke which you would, it would be just consuming lots of oil.

Do a leakdown test. Fill each cylinder w/ compressed air. And listen to where the leak is coming from.

If the valve is opening at the wrong time it will cause a bad compression reading. Try the valve adjustment. Get a feeler gauge and check each cylinder.

is that is the case you might have a blown headgasket.

does it make any noise when you listen to it idle. like an exhaust leak noise.

i had a low comp problem with my 5.0 and the headgasket was blown and venting to the atmosphere.

That really sounds like a ring problem... just tear it apart and re-ring it before the problem gets worse!

Yes, you can drop in new rings with the motor still in the car. If you're doing it with someone that knows what they are doing (read: is familar tearing down your motor), it can be done in a day. FYI it takes me about 2 to remove a b-series cyl head and I'm not rushing so it's no big deal.

PLEASE DONT

Is this the first compression test you have done since the build? I sure hope not!

How about a leak-down test? That would be what I did before I went any further.
