Copper Spray on Headgasket
I am building a sleeved turbo h22. Coming from my 3SGTE backround, depending on the gasket we use sometimes we spray sometimes we dont.
Do you guys copper spray stock honda headgaskets for race motors or put them in dry?
My application is a fully built sleeved SC61 H22 looking for anywhere close to 600whp.
Thanks,
Charles

Re: Copper Spray on Headgasket (Suprdave)
yup definitely cheap insurance
$7 a can that will spray like 5-6 gaskets with 2 coats.
its one of those little things that adds up to a healthy setup.

with the 3SGTE motors... the HKS gaskets already have some kinda stickish coating and we dont spray those and never have problems. The TRD and stock Gen III gaskets are just MLS metal and we do spray those. I always figured that it certainly couldnt hurt anything.
I was just curious what the trend was in this community.
Ill go ahead and spray it. Couldn't hurt... could it?

Re: (earl)
Hey guys,
I just wanted to bring up a post from the dead. I had a few questions about using copper spray on my 83mm sleeved B18C with a Cometic 0.30 MLS HG. When you guys use copper spray on your HG do you just do a light coat on both sides? Do I have to wait for the stuff to dry a little or should I spray it on both sides and place the HG in place right away?
Also I wanted to run some other stuff by you guys to make sure I have it right. For my ARP head stud installation this is what I was gonna do:
-use a little ARP moly lube on the long threaded part of the stud (should I also use some blue loctite?)
-hand screw each stud in place long threaded part into the block and wiggle it every so often as I screw it down to release air pockets
-hold up the Cometic HG and spray both sides with copper spray (is this right?)
-let the copper spray dry a little (is this right?)
-carefully place HG into place
-install two dowel pins
-carefully lower head into place
-install washers onto each stud
-install 12pt nut onto each stud (will I need a 12pt deep socket?)
-torque it in steps up to 70-75 lb/ft (since I'm using the ARP moly lube)
Let me know if that sounds right guys.
Thanks
EDIT: the block and head just got rebuilt, by earl. So I dont know if Copper spray is really needed or not.

Phew!!! thanks for clearing that up Ross. People say it's for aded insurance, so I'll just make sure to recheck the studs after a few thousand miles to make sure they dont loosen up. So should I use some ARP moly lube and a little blue loctite n the studs?

Re: (BlueShadow)
Loctite is not required, but you can if you want. With the new studs its always a good idea to double check them after an hour or two. It takes a bit of time, but its easy insurance against having to replace a headgasket. Typically you only need to do this with brand new studs, as after they have been heat cycled a few times they don't need a retorque. Use the ARP moly lube with them, and follow their torque specs in the instruction sheet, using the pattern in the factory service manual. Using copper spray is a bandaid for not properly surfacing the head and block.

Re: (JoeD427)
I've used it in the past but recently i've seen our engine builder assemble 900hp naturally aspirated big blocks with fel-pro mls, no copper spray and have no issues. Although our engines are salt water cooled, they run over 6k rpm for hours with no leaking problems. I guess its good insurance on a motor that might not get taken apart every season.

Re: (rudebwoy)
well if its copper and called copper spray then its probably the same stuff.
the **** we use for brakes is blue but it goes on the backs of the pads and its to stop them from chattering on the caliper.
