Default Coolant Drop

I noticed recently that the coolant sometimes drops below the minimum level or an empty overflow coolant bottle having topped up to at or above the max level. I don't see any signs of coolant burning or leaks? What does this normally indicate? The motor seems to be running normal although I have noticed that somtimes the oil temp goes up higher than normal during city driving..

The block is a fully built 84mm Benson sleeved B18C6 with Eagles and CPs.

Nah, oil cooled.

Also very occasionally the water temp needle would go above the normal operating temp (above half way) in normal driving conditions..

So wtf is going on here?? This isn't normal surely! I'm just keeping a close eye out on things or am I paranoid?... prevention is better than cure.

I had the same problem in my car but after very close examination i noticed a leak on the bootom of the radiator/hose. After correcting this the coolant level stays more or less constant.
The main problem that causes coolant to disappear is usually the headgasket

I agree. Sounds like a head gasket issue.

f**k! thats bad news man. Do you think it could be caused by insufficient torque on the headstuds (ARPs)? or could it be cos I didn't have them retorqued 2nd time?

No sleeves here... same issue... f22b1, lowered boost.. it helps.
ARPs are on the way.... I believe its the head lifting a bit under higher boost, At most i was running 11 psi though...shitwa- hope the studs fix it.....

No smoke, no oil in water, no water in oil...

Backed down to 8 psi

Hey Steve, hmm similar symptoms to me Fully built 84mm benson block with CP pistons.

At first I was seeing my coolant sprayed all over my engine bay tho only after some hard boostin, which seemed to indicate the head lifting (ARP head studs)

2 h/g's later and the symptoms are now lots of white smoke when I boost even 5psi, and coolant levels obviously dropping too.

Have you had the valve cover off recently? I had a LOT of mayo type stuff in mine before... and that was pretty much the only sign of a problem other than the odd time it emptied the coolant everywhere (and I think you managed to be there every time to help )

Weird... will watch this thread with interest

On the sleeved blocks could it be the sleeves shifting around???? As i mentioned i am not sleeved, but seeing similar things... including pissing coolant out my resivour....

Watching with interest as well....

I mean to test it out I went a week without touching boost just normal driving basically staying under 0 vacumm. It still lost coolant. I have to fill up every week. I dont see any coolant anywhere, but sometimes right after I top my coolant off and drive for about 20 minutes when I stop and get out I smell burning coolant and I pop the hood and see nothing. Need more help!

Anybody have ANY pinging (detonation) first ... at ALL???? Ive heard that can make the heads lift by increasing cylinder press...

Nope no detonation at all.

Something else weird since I got the h/g done last time is that the car doesn't want to start (won't idle, sounds like its firing on 3 cylinders for a couple of minutes). Once its warmed up it sometimes idles (barely) at 700rpm and a/fs are rich (sometimes as low as 11). Maybe not related I dunno.

The car has done 11k miles since I had the block built and has generally run great but I've had serious overheating problems from the start, due to the fact it kept ejecting the coolant Have now replaced the h/g twice and the ARP head studs once. The head is completely stock.

Compression test???? White smoke out the breather or anything ???(i.e ringlands...) hopefully not!!

expletive i hope i didnt crack MY sleeves (stock) doubt it, iron and all but am nervous... pulling it apart next week to upgrade to ARP studs and new head gasket.... and take a look see.... hope ring lands are cool and ****. I dunno, i really think in my case its the head lifting though.... still nervous

check ur radiators, does it look like theres dried up coolant at all on it, could be geetin real hot and pressurized and slowly leaking out somewhere but burning on the radiator itself so it doesnt ever leak on the ground or get burned in the engine, this happened to me and i used that metallic flake liquid that is used to fix minor leaks and problem went away. I heard it works if u have a slightly leaking headgasket also, i'd try it out it was only like $5 a bottle at advanced auto parts store. its a silvery metallic flake liquid in a small bottle. hope this might help a few of u guys.

If you are using a HP cometic head gasket, it could be an issue. The HP gaskets have a fire ring within the gasket that are specially designed for some applications. Also turbocharged motors produce really high heat. Water can be boiling away causing the coolant level to drop leaving you with more coolant than water.

These are are very good opinions... I noticed a lot of us in here have benson blocks and are tuned by mase ... It could be the heat issue... Right now I do have a cometic headgasket that is wrong so Im going to be replacing that soon and Im hoping that is the coolant problem. Keep this thread bumped!

Are you going to go OEM Head gasket????...I think that is the only other option for me. Ive heard the OEM with the copper spray is the way to go for the f series...just wondering what you guys are planning on using BESIDES the Cometic.....
