Controlling Boost
Is it possible to safely keep boost from a turbo down to about 5 psi? If someone wanted to have the added power of a turbo, but not add too much stress on the engine, sorta like a supercharger, how would he/she go about doing this? Just a boost controller?
The boost is normally controlled by the wastegate. If you want to keep boost relatively low, then get a lower spring rate. I have a Tial 6.5PSI wastegate, therefore the lowest boost i can go is 6.5psi. The boost controller would only be used to up it from that rate. When I 1st got my turbo, I was only using the wastegate to regulate the boost and it felt o.k, but nothing spectacular. I added a manual boost controller, keeping the same PSI setting, boost hit harder and much much nicer. As for a supercharger, boost is controlled by the size of the supercharger pulley.
Thanks... when i mentioned the super, i was referring to the amount of boost. Are there wastegates out there that can allow you to boost as low as 5 lbs?
