Checking for DETONATION while tuning?
Well i guess this one is for the TUNERS out there. I was just wondering how u guys check for detonation while tuning? Say that its a built motor w/standalone... How do you know when to stop adding boost and timing while tuning a car? Do yall do some kind of special trick to detect detonation and back off on the timing. I guess what i want to know is how do you tune the timing on a high horsepower motor to prevent detonation? any replies would be great. Did a search and nothing helped.

If you're adding timing and it has stopped making power, stop adding timing and back off until it starts losing power. For detecting detonation, chassis ears work well, hooked directly to the block. sounds like firecrackers.

Well, there you have it. You may need to purchase addidtional hardware to use knock sensing, but at least you have the ability to do it.

The best way is to listen to it with your ears. This is what I do. I put a stud on an open hole somewhere on the head. What you can do on the intake manifold is run an extended stud, just one is needed. Then get a vaccum line and put it over the stud. Then you can get a stethascope from eckards and hook up the vaccum line to the stethascope and listen for detination.

It's called a Dyno
Wideband the fuel to 12.0:1, then adjust the timing til power falls off slightly and back off a degree or two. Done. Tuned.

F.A.S.T. actually recommends to leave the knock sensor off for high horse power applications. Did you get your car running yet?
