Default catch can smoking

so here is my setup

fully built bottom b16 end and top, peakboost ac kit and a 57 trim garrett. my issue is with my breather. before i installed my catch can i smoked a lot out of my breather on my valve cover. after installing my catch can it does the same thing but only out of the catch can. its the endyn one with 2 -10 lines going to my valve cover and a drain back to my block. i heard a little smoke is normal but mine is doing it A LOT!!!! HELP

they always smoke when you first start the car or under load but once warmed up and at idle it should all but stop or even stop. if it dont do a leak down test right away and see what the results are.

i am almost positive its not a cracked piston. took the head off last week and they looked to be good. i did a comp test 2 months ago and the numbers were where they were supposed to be.

i will try the leakdown test but what will that prove for my smoke in the catch can??? also is it normal to have the tiniest bit of oil in your radiator/coolant.... not coolant in your oil but oil in your coolant? because i do have that issue and im not sure if thats causing the smoke

there should never be oil in the coolant, the leak down test will tell you if any cylinder has a problem that can allow extra blow by ( smoke) past the piston and thus out the breather or catch can. often a cranking compression test can miss a problem. what i like to do as well is while the leak down test is being done have the rad cap off and fill it all the way full and watch for air bubbles during the leak down test, if you get any on a particular cylinder thats bad .

we couldnt tell either by looking at the pistons with the head off till we took the actual piston out and where the rings were a big chunk was cracked.... But i would do a leakdown test like boosted91crx said good luck.

The ring gap would have to be massive to get any real noticable smoke in the crankcase. I've done it hehe

x2, gapping rings to big can cause more blowby

How much is a lot? One of the by products of combustion is water. It can make it's way out as a vapor from the breather and will generally go away once the engine warms up. A little water also gets in the oil and will not go away until you get the oil good and hot.

So... define how much.

If you are certain your compression tests are good I would think you have nothing to worry about. With that being said, excessive blow-by is usually a sign of bad rings, cracked rings, broken ringlands... etc. But if this was the case you would not have good compression results.

Good luck.

i need to redo my rings also. i have blowby coming out of the dipstick =/. I took off my head to get redone and my machinist told me that the valves werent seating. I was banking on hoping that that would be the problem for my blowby. I slapped the head back on and it still has blowby like a ****.

time to tear down the block and regap the rings!

by the way, thats the downside of driving it with the rings gapped too large?

has anyone heard of a catch can smoking a lot due to a blown turbo. if i remember correctly i always has a minimal amout of smoke just coming out of my breather on my valve cover, but i didnt actually install my catch can until my exhaust side seal became bad on the turbo.

as for the ring gap size..... are there no hazards of running to big of a ring gap????
