catch can question mark

catch can question mark
well.. i bought an eg hatch with a ls motor + turbo
it has a catch can but the catch can leaks oil all over everything
im trying to figure out why and i was hoping you guys could help out.
heres the catch can setup.
the top and bottom hoses go to the back of the engine block
the middle hose, the black one, i guess is just vent?
it goes here:
i noticed that most catch can setups were venting the valve cover
is there a purpose to the setup on my engine?
whats wrong with it.
sorry for the blurry cameraphone pics and thanks for your help

Re: catch can question mark (juz10)
so do the oil hoses go to a oil filter sandwich plate cuz if so then wouldn't the oil pressure be going both ways through the catch can. i dont really know much about them but couldn't you make one hose go from the block so oil would flow that way and then the other one go to the valve cover.

no the top and bottom hoses go directly to the engine block.
i think the top hose is why it leaks oil, its got a small crack. i'll just cut the end off and stick it back on there.
im just trying to figure out what this setup is and how to make it work right.
the guy i bought the car from said that the middle hose, the black one in the picture, is supposed to go just behind the intake, before the turbo
but from searching ive learned that that is a bad idea because all your shitty oil and everything would go through your turbo - bad.
i really dont have the know-how to vent my valve cover but if i must then i must.
im just trying to make sense of what i have on the car

When I was looking into my catch can set up I found a pretty intense thread on here about them.. I think I searched pcv. Really good read if you can find it

pcv is too short to search for. if you can find the thread link it, i'd like to read.
as for the threads i have seen about it, they're very informative but its hard to relate them to this setup because i don't know what the previous owner was going for when he installed it.

yes, if it's full and your not using a drainback feature witch in the pics and what you say it does then maybe something is clogged and you need to drain it. people vent from the valve cover more so then the block because less stuff comes out, meaning you won't be spewing oil all over everything.
your best bet is to swap the 2 hoses on the top where the black one will be on top or you can find a bolt and plug it then drill the top until you can add a Breather filter. that's what I had to do to get it to vent better. I wish I had a pic for you, can't find the thread.

It looks like it already has a breather filter on the top of it.. but i cant see the top of the catchcan. Hook the upper hoses into the back of the block and plug the bottom line. You dont need a vent if it has a breather on top of it. The bottom hole is for a drain back setup...

to me it looks like there are a few issues
1. hoses are too small
2. can itself is too small
3. that middle black tube is worthless. the can should vent from the filter on top. if anything run that line to the valve cover for more crankcase ventalation.
i run 4 lines. 2 to the valve cover, 2 to the back of the block. you can see one acts as a drainback

the hose on the bottom of your catch can is acting as a drainback feature. that means anything that goes into the can is draining back to the back of the block where your venting from(and yes that does go down to your oil pan. now that you have a better picture, get rid of the black hose.

put both breather hoses from the crank case on the top two holes on the catch can. The breather on top is the only ventillation the can needs. If you want to do a drain back then take the bottom hole on the catch can and run a hose to the oil pan. But if you dont want to do a drain back then just plug the bottom hole.
Some ppl dont run a drain back option because the oil turns into a nasty sludge in the can... Possibly from the heat coming in from the crank and moisture inside the can kinda milks the oil. You'll have to see how often your catch can fills up, if it fills up quick then i'd look into investing into a better unit or venting off the valve cover instead.
