Default Catch Can Installation while motor is in the bay. Difficulty factor

Alright guys,

Those of you who've installed catch cans with your setups, while the motor is still in the engine bay... What would you say the difficulty factor would be, from 1 - 10? I mean, I can see how easy it would be while the motor is out on a stand, but the limited space has got to be a PITA if the motor is still in the bay.

Give me some details if you can please. I'm planning to install my Can soon, and just tryin to get any heads up issues cleared up before I dive in.

Nick

it depends on what type of catch can you talking about. the regular ebay ones is basically no work involved.
but the endyn or moroso one that replaces the black oem box. you have to go from under the car to remove the box, remove the plugs and install the fittings, and plug the hole where the black box goes with the freeze plug, remove the small fitting close to the deck and plug the hole. everything is easier with the intake manifold bracket removed. or just remove the intake manifold, and you can do it from above the engine easier.

rude,
I'm doing the Endyne style setup. So basically, its gonna be a PITA. I'm not planning on taking off my IM. I'm just wondering though, how hard is it to take out that plug for the second nipple, located on the block?

it was tight but it was not hard just need the right size allen socket 14mm, you need to take out IM bracket though because it holds the black box in, and go from under the car.

Oh, just to tell you, that 14mm allen plug was tight as expletive. I had a 1.5 foot breaker bar on it from under the car and that wasn't even enough, I had to put a peice of pipe on the breaker bar to finally break it loose. The other hard thing was getting the hose on the fittings and tightening the hose clamps. Some oil on the inside of the hose would help this though, but tightening the clamps was a bitch. Just be patient and take your time, it shouldn't take more than a couple hours to do. On a scale of 1-10, I give it about a 4-5. If you had access to a lift it would probably be around a 3 then because it's easier to crank on that plug. Have fun

no it werent that hard. I did mine on a engine stand, the bolts was hard so I hit it with the impact.
did my friends while it was on the car, it was easer to remove if you try to tighten the plugs then try to remove them, the hose was easy also, just put some silicone grease or vaseline. hose clamps just use a ratchet and a 8mm socket with extension.

Its not impossible, but its easier with it out of the car and on an engine stand.

like it was said before, its not really that hard even if the motor is in the car.

im about to hook my endyn kit up today. i found that by taking out the halfshaft there is much more room to work with. shouldn't be hard at all.

goodluck

when i did my endyn, i was lucky, i did my manifold swap at the same time. it isnt that hard, it is hard to get out the block plugs in the back. not bad but a little difficult. a lift would make it so much easier.

I had to use a 1/2" breaker bar with an extension on the end to loosen the one on the driver side. If you don't plan to spend the money on a 14mm Snap On tool, you can do what I did and buy a hex key from Grainger for <$4, cut a piece off, then use a hot glue gun to hold it inside a socket.

you could always take the head off?

i mean its partially removing the engine, but i can have my head off in about 45 mins. this would make it alot easier

(buy a new head gasket )

which way do you plan on doing your catch can? im doing mine this spring too.

Thanks guys. I kinda figured the allen plug was gonna be my main concern.

I'm going to do it dashers way. Catch can with the 2 ports from the back of the block. I'll be going from underneath the car.

if your real ghetto you can take a bolt with a 14mm head and stick the head of hte bolt in the plug. i had to do that once. then i welded a random peice of metal to the bolt for leverage. hahaha those were the days
