Car Wont Start.......Engine try to escape?
ok new problems. i fixed the valves so it does not sound like a diesel truck anymore. I took the timing belt off and checked the timing and it seemed ok.
NOW, my car barely even starts and the engine jerks around like its trying to escape the mounts and bogs out and dies
wtf is gouing on here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i checked the timing 2 times on my cams. I dont get something though. Since I put in a thicker headgasket, (~1mm), people tell me that I need adjustable cam gears.
When I line up TDC on piston 1, the up arrow on the intake side is slightly crooked but i cannot get it straight. I was told that this was because of the headgasket. I checked the timing with my timing gun and set it to 0 also.

Well the way i usally double check is to take out the #1 spark plug and put a long extension in the hole and watch it move up and down. When it is at TDC the extension will be at it's highest point and the timing mark on the crank pulley will line up with the line on the timing belt cover. When thats set i then will line the cams up and install the belt. If its running that bad and it looks like the intake cam is off then either advance or retard one tooth and see how it runs. Make sure that you retighten the tensioner also. HTH
Btw i would think that both cams would be off if thats the case of the thicker headgasket. Not sure about that tho.

Re: Car Wont Start.......Engine try to escape? (VaporTrail)
Wait so you have NO ignition timing, ie, the ignition fires at TDC, not 16 degrees BEFORE TDC? If that is the case, you have found your problem
All I did was put #1 to TDC, shoot the timing gun and lined up that little triange to the white mark.
What did I do wrong or what else do I need to do?
Thanks

what JOhn(vaportrail)is trying to say is that when you check with teh timing gun, you're supposed to chekc for 16 degrees BDC, not 0 degrees....so basically you have no ignition timing right now. That's your problem

Valve timing and ignition timing (using the timing light) are two different things. You can set your valve timing while engine is off, but you must set your ignition timing while it's running. You should have 4 marks on your pulley, a lone mark and three marks close together -- the lone mark is TDC. Your stock ignition timing is the middle of the three marks. Don't forget the service connector when you're setting the ignition timing...
