Default car breaking up after shift!?

well, for the pst couple weeks i have driven my car with out the vtec engaged on it since my ecu didnt have datalogging and my buddy who was tuning it has a non-vtec ecu that has datalogging, we used his to tune until i could get the parts i needed. so tonight we hooked it all up and took the car out for a drive. it ran fine except for when vtec would start to engage it would break up. then the car started over heating and smoke came from the hood
pulled over and the water neck was loose.....god knows how the hell both bolts came loose but they did. took it back out and finally got the car to stop breaking up, we were having problems with the crossover at around 5k. so he messed with that for a lil while and finally it pulled great. no more breaking up and pulled hard. until i did a hard pull from 3-4 and as soon as i shifted to 4th it back fired a lil bit and felt like it had no power at all. id let off the gas then immediately get back on and it would fall on its face. as sson as i let the motor rev down to about 3 grand and drive normal for a second then get on it hard it will pull fine until i try to shift.

now im stumped and its irritating as hell. i have heard about the GE lsvtec kit supplying an oil line that is to big and could effet my oil pressure at the vtec pressure solenoid, could this cause it? or is it something that we couldnt get right with our tune?

probably in your tune. do you have a wideband? see if you are running lean or rich when you shift

I'm gonna take a guess.

You're using Crome?

Yes, it happens so fast that we don't get a reading quick enough, it's almost like it would act if it hit boost cut, only it continues to do it unless you let the car rev down real far.

What are the AFRs through boost before redline?

Crome has a problem with going super rich after you let off the throttle. I had it happen a lot on my 1-2 shift because 1 would be in the 10s AFR wise. I would shift into 2nd, peg the pedal on the floor and it would instantly break up and bog because it was super rich. I would have to let off completely and wait for a second before I got back on it.

I never fixed it through Crome, but when I switched to Hondata never had the problem again.

that sounds a lot like what it was doing. we were doing a 3rd gear pull, it was running real strong up to redline at about 11.3 afr right before he shifted and then it broke up real bad like you described.

obviously it has to be fixable without using something else for tuning.

by no means do i do this as a profession, but i would say i'm definatly capable of making the car run well & safe to drive.

Check your spark plug gap, set it to .025 - .028

You would have to lean out redline a bit more and make sure your tipin isn't set too high, although I really don't think tipin even works in Crome.

Otherwise Crome has no way to control the deceleration enleanment, so it will always go rich after shifts.

I've never had that problem with any of the couple hundred cars I tuned on Crome. Then again, I made a point of adjusting my TPS so that fuel cut worked, which seems to me like it might be the culprit here... or falling out of VTEC, as another poster suggested.
