Dunno how it is in Nova Scotia, but in Vancouver we ship our sleeved blocks to a shipping company/post office 2 min across the border. We then pick it up ourselves and declare anything that we want to. As long as you present proper paperwork, and they know that the block was done in the states then there is no duty, and just tax on the part, not on shipping. Sometimes if the customs agent is in a good mood, or just plain ignorant then you can get away without paying the tax either.

I managed to get my tanabe exhaust across ($500USD) without duty despite the fact that it said "Made in Japan" all over the box by just paying the tax. I have also personally brought an exospeed sleeved block across as a warranty claim although that was almost seized by customs as they require that before you ship out the block to the states that you fill out some paperwork and record the block number etc, so on it's return you can present the paperwork and the block and whammo no duty, no tax either. The guard let us go that time though thankfully.

We just had another sleeved block with darton sleeves come in by UPS this time straight into canada. We went to the UPS depot and brokered the item ourselves (just tell the delivery man that you refuse shipment pending your own brokering) and the best part was that customs is 3km away from the depot so there is no inspection of the item, you can claim anything reasonable that you want as well as declare made in the USA which means no duty as well.

shipping from the US to canada and dealing with UPS customs and brokerage is a disaster......

you can always find canadian machine shops that will re-sleeve your engine for you.

i know of a couple here in toronto that do decent work.

There is a shop in NS, (about 4 hours from me in NB) that is possibly one of the best in the country at building motor/sleeving/headwork, etc.. but they are super expensive. Had them install my rods, pistons, bearings last summer and it cost me $700, and everyone I talked to that had work done there couldn't believe I got it done that CHEAP....
