Default can a missing link go bad?

bought a used missing link for my friends 97 civic sohc vtec..
installed it with the little hole on the top...
it keeps on throwing code 3..
are missing links known to get messed up? or is there a difference between
b-series ones and D-series ones?
thanks

I'm not sure if they're different, but I know they have to be cleaned every now and then.

mine was quirky after using it for about 5-6 months - sometimes it would let me boost, other times the car would just bog down. changing the filter/cleaning it helped but it would keep happening from time to time, so I upgraded my fuel mgmt...
