Overlap is when both intake and exhaust are open at the same time. When this occurs with a turbo engine the cylinders don't properly scavenge., or properly push out all the 'naties' so they stay in the cylinder. Since the 'nasties' are already spent they just take up space that clean fuel and air could use. Not to mention they create hot spots and increase the chance of detonation. It' advisable to tune out the overlap with Type-R or NA cams.
