Default Burning Roms: Stupid Question

Hello,

I know this is gonna be one of those posts I make that I read sometime in the future, and realize how stupid I sound, anywho...

I have been researching (including using the search feature) fuel management. I can across the post about the free software from Uberteg, and am extremely interested. I understand that I will need to purchase a burner, chips, and download the software. What I dont understand is what I would do with the chip after it is burned? Is there some link anyone can gimme to read more on this, or perhaps explain it in more detail?

after burning such chips you put it in the ecu. You have to mod the ecu so that it will take that chip.

err, yes... I supposed I should have mentioned that I understand that perticular aspect of it. What I dont get is where it goes in the ECU (P30) and how I "mod" it to take the chip?

oh.. sorry.. bu there

pay no attention to the red circle, that's just hondata s100.

But look at the chip right next to it that has hondata printed on it. The chip that you burn goes there, on the p30.

Sorry dont know of any links that shows you how to mod the ecu

uhhh...usually when you wanna rechip something, you need eeprom to burn the image on the chip...and some sort of zif socket so you don't have to solder everytime you pull it out...

ok... So you remove the orginal chip, and solder in the "zif" socket in place of it which allows you to simply plug in and/or unplug the chip? Makes sence.

Now, if anyone is still reading this and has experience with both, which is better? Simply going with a Hondata or buring chips yourself, considering formost safety (as far as the engine longevity is conserned) and overall cost?

IMO - Hondata is better because you have support from Hondata and dealers such as myself.

I'm having the same dilema. It's like the $1000 price difference. Do you go down the path well traveled or the one least traveled.

The problem with using the free software is that the bugs could be many and not fixed promptly.

Read all the threads on the PGMFI forums, that's what I did.

Yes, this is true. However, with the ability to burn my own ROMS i can do a lot of "tuning" and also brun chips for friends. Also, the cost factor is extremely important to me, but I dont want to sacrafice safety for price.

If price is a concern of yours, I think you are in the wrong sport.
Sorry.

Doing something half a$$ed will cost you more money in the long run.

hmm.. not sure how to respond to that. I think its pretty safe to say that most people are concerned with price, its just a matter of getting the best product you can afford, without sacraficing too much preformance or quality. Saying that if you a person who cares about pricing, you are in the wrong sport is just ...

I am aware of this. However, please explain to me why burning roms is "half assed"?

I came off sounding like a dick huh? I'm sorry let me rephrase.

This sport tends to be a bit pricey. And when buy for less expensive products it usually means you are sacraficing performance and realiability.

Burning roms isn't half a$$ed, but going uberchip might be considered half assed. You never know what kind of bugs exists and wheather these bugs will ever get addressed.

There 'may' be bugs... Haven't been any so far, and my brother has been running it since January or so. So what if there's a big that doesn't get fiexd? Then switch to hondata if it pisses you off that much, but untill then, why not save $1000?

Just my opinion vs. a Hondata vendors opinion I guess.

http://www.pgmfi.org and I believe there are tutorials on how to chip an ECU.

I personally will be going with Uberdata and doing my own burning. Dont get me wrong, I'd get hondata in a second, but i can't afford it at this time. Tuition expenses. But ya see im in love with the sport, its way fun!

Some obd-0 ECU's have 'external ROMs' and are easy. You just desolder the chip, then solder a socket in its place. Thats it.

Obd-1 ECU's are a little bit harder as you have to do some modding in addition to just adding the socket.

Obd-2... good luck. I think a few people started working on it.

After you mod your ECU you'll need to download some software to save ROMs as .bin files. And you'll need some way to burn your .bin files to your chips. Oh yeah, and you'll need some chips obviously.

PGMFI.org has the info. There a post in the 'phorum' under "general" called 'official noobies thread' with a bunch of links. Thats the one to check out first.

Ok lazy, heres a link to some info for ya:

I'm not posting this as an attack against you or Hondata, I've heard only good things about you, but... heads up. http://pgmfi.org/phorum/read.php?f=7&i=404&t=404

to people who care about their customers. It even boils down to who you go to for your Hondata needs, not all dealers are the same.

OTOH, .

If I exclude the cost of repairing other people's wreck damage and general maintainence, I have ~$2500 in a high 12 second daily driver. I'm a turbo upgrade away from being significantly faster.

Knowledge and skills are directly interchangeable with money... the price you pay to collect knowledge and skills is in years, much the same as how all the big ballers around here collect turbo setups over the course of years.
