It has 4000 miles w/ JEPistons forged pistons and rods, 9.0.1, P&P head, 3 angle vale job. he wants trade for my gsr engine cause he doesnt wanna turbo the type-r now that he has a wrx and my question is, is there anyway of telling if this is true pistons or anything? i have already picked up the turbo kit sitting in my B-room, just wanna be sure on the motor is what it is!!!! Is it running in a car? You will def hear the JE's slapping. You can and should also pull the oil pan and check it out from underneath. You can tell if it has stock rods and pistons from there.
As far as the head work, you can see if any port work has been done by looking in the intake and exhaust ports (with the header and IM off obviously). Also you can check out the valve train by removing the valve cover. While you in there I would check the valve clearances as well to make sure it's not way out of check for some reason.

Also check:
Plugs
Oil color
Water Color (if you see any)
Too see if there is any oil leaking from head gasket or signs of it.
And make sure the crank spins very freely with the plugs removed. You should not feel any "catches" or anything like that.

White Smoke beat me to it again....

The best way to check if the engine "is as he claims" is to take the oil pan off, grap a flashlight and check the markings on the underside of the pistons. The rods will be easy to tell whether or not they're stock.
