I think the difference on an automatic is that your pretty much always shifting wide-open-throttle, so the throttle blade doesn't close. Since you don't take your foot off the gas when it shifts in an automatic. Now when you do take your foot off such as to decelerate that will create the pressure differential needed to blow off. So, the answer is yes it will still work the way it should, the thing is it might not work the way you want it to.
