Default borg warner gm-8 useable for a high hp solid deck b16a?

well guys, i am trying to make 400whp for under 1500 dollars. so far im almost done and have spent not even a thousand.

i picked up amint borg warner ihi gm-8 last night with no shaft play for 30 bucks from a guy who doesnt know much about turbos bviously. my question is, when aprox. will this beast spool. ive had a sc61 and 60 trim on my gsr and am wondering if this turbo will display simila traits.

plans for motor are 20-25 psi

obd1 b16a filled block longblock - 400 bucks
.10 over srp pistons - 200 bucks
eagle rods traded for them
b.w gm-8 30 bucks
dsm bov freebie
til 38mm traded for

so yeah, its coming together nicely

motor is all there just needs to be assmbled.
just looking to see if anyone has any experience running one of these.

thanks

I have a borg-warner gm-5, but I'm not sure how it compares to the gm-8. Mine has a .63 a/r compressor and .70 a/r turbine and starts building boost at about 2800-3000 on my h22. It has worked well for me so far.

i know the gm-4 and gm-5 are earlier versions of the gm-8

the gm-8 is the latest version of the turbo used on the 6.5l chevy diesels. i couldnt find specs though.

i know its a .70 compressor, but i was unsure on the .ex housing a/r.. any ideas what type of hp they will support?

a 3k spool on a h22a will net me prob 4500 to 5k spool on a built b16a... thats acceptable

I had my numbers way off on the a/r for the gm-5 it's a .70 compressor and a .60 turbine. I was trying to go off memory

Not sure, but I would think that the gm-8 might be able to support up to 475-500hp? I know that mine keeps pulling hard till red-line.

I bought mine from this website: http://blaastperformance.com/. The guy that I ordered from seemed to know quite a bit about the borg's, so you might be able to email him and see if he has any information on it.

The website I listed above sells the 4 bolt flanges that fit them.

The flanges are flat. You'll probably want to take it to a machine shop to have the outer edge machined down to match the height of the WG hole.

Edit: I meant take the turbine housing to the machine shop and have it machined down so it's level with the WG hole.

Sup, hotsex.

Old GTP38's on the earlier Chebby diesels were good for 450 whp. I'm sure that pile of crap is commeasurate.

why buy anything when you have the tools and skill to make it urself. im filling the wg hole and making a external blockoff flange myself.

having a plasma cutter makes everything easy.
