Boosting jdm b18b quick noob question?
I just have a quick question regarding boosting a jdm b18b motor. Which is equivalent to a usdm b18b1.
I plan on boosting it in the spring but I wanna know if I need to run a catch can with fittings ran off of the valve cover. I'm asking this b/c the jdm ls motor does not have a breather box on the back of the block. It does, however have a pcv valve on the valve cover like the b20 valve cover which is ran to the intake manifold. I just wanna know what to do b/c I'm afraid since it doesn't have the breather box, it will build up pressure in the crank case and blow out seals.
Would it be safe to just run a filter on the vacuum port on the valve cover that sits right behind the oil cap and disregard the pcv valve, or would this not be sufficient enough venting for the motor? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

i dont run a catch can on my b16. it seems most high horsepower cars run them, but the average boosted honda doesnt realy need one. Your best bet would be to post in FI

Thanks for the reply. Does everyone else agree? I was just worried b/c my motor doesn't have a pcv box on the back of the block, but it does have the pcv valve on the valve cover.

even though you dont have the black box on the jdm motor it should still have the two 14mm hex plugs on each side of the oil filter. you can run a catch can from there or run lines off the valve cover or both.
a catch can is not required but will be helpful especially on a higher hp motor. if you do install one, you can just remove the stock pcv setup all together

the stock pcv draws gases from the crank case and pulls them in the intake manifold, mostly for emissions reasons. its a one way check valve that closes under positive pressure (boost) so it would provide no venting under boost pressure.

So can I just boost it like it is, or do I have to run a catch can. I just don't want it to blow up b/c there is no venting of the crankcase.

the motors not going to blow up. it might push some seals out... like mine did but its not going to blow the motor. u need something weather its the black box, the **** on the head (ls motors have them), or a catch can setup. there are many ways to do it. find the one you like the most... use it!
