Default Boosted Crower 404's?

Anybody had any experience with boosting these? I haven't found a vast amount of knowledge on this but I would like to know a little more about it. I noticed the lift would be great for boost but the duration isn't that ideal for a snail so I would imagine tuning out the overlap would be a real bitch. If anyone has had this kind of experience let me know.

a buddy of mine, sohcd16y8, is running them.

they seem pretty great in his car. i'm super impressed with his car at 19psi...

bit turbo, sleeved block, and valvetrain.

he's got a lot of sorting out to do on the car, but it hustles.

They are some sweet cams but it depends on your setup a lot. They are really big top end cams. It pulls hard from 5k up, but after 6 it is ridiculous. You really need to rev the motor out to take advantage of them.

What is your setups?

I will have CP pistons, Eagle rods w/ oem bearings and 3/8 rod bolts, and Micropolished knife edged and balanced LS crank in the bottom. The head has KMS dual Valve springs and retainers, P&P, 3 angle Valve job, and the 404's w/ Skunk2 cam gears. I am just kinda hoping for a reasonable tune capability.

They are not too bad to tune, they just take time. Your idle is going to be a bit rough too. They get really lopy below 1400rpm.

That lopey Idle sounds awesome. If I heard a car that sounded like that and was also boosted I would think it was pretty mean. I don't really care what people think as long as its a hell raiser. Do these make better power than the 402T's?

Well you cant really compare the too cams power wise. The 404 will make a **** ton more up top, but say goodbye to your midrange (at least compared to the 402t's). Its really up to you how you want to run the car, I planned on revving the motor out and keeping it in the power range, so I bought these cams.

So I will lose alot of midrange or is it something that a B16 tranny can take care of?

Well it depends on your turbo, tranny, tire size. There are so many factors that come into play. YOu really just have to try it for yourself and see. There are not enough people running these cams in boosted cars yet to have definite results.

Sweet I'm doing something not mainstream! LOL Well I think I will give them a shot and afterwards I will let everybody know about what to expect. Thanks. By the way I think my midrange might be alright I am running HX 14", a B16 tranny with Spoon final drive, and I only have a 57 trim turbo

Yeah it will be fine, you may fall off a bit up top though but not much. I will see how the car does when I rev it out some more, and if it is still falling out of powerband I may come down on the turbo size a bit.

Speaking of revving out do you think that OEM LS bearings will hold up to that kind of revving?

There is no reason they would not, the bearings should never come into contact with the crank anyway and there are plenty of LSVtecs getting revved well above 8k.

same bearings as any other b series.

a friend of mine made 630 on a non vtec b18b with 404's and 30 psi on gt35R, the car was sold on here, silver integra. Im planning on going the same route but im shooting for 400 since its my daily. ill save the big power for the race car.

I have experience with them. Tuning them isnt hard. Idled from 850RPM - 950RPM with AEM EMS. At 14lbs with a slipping RPS clutch, GT3076RLE, cam gears at 0*, straight off a street tune, ignition timing coming unsynched the car made 317whp 245ft-lbs on a Dyno Dynamics dyno which reads lower than a Dyno Jet most everyone is use to. Peak torque was 6300RPM and horsepower was still going up at 7500RPM

Hell yeah! I am gonna be tuning with an EMS as a matter of fact I already have it. I had a sneaking suspicion that the EMS would make it a bit easier. I had a friend that had some trouble tuning a set of ITB's on a ZC but I've seen a few on here tuned with an EMS run flawless. Do you guys think a turbo upgrade might be in need to use these cams optimally? Or would the 57 work ok for me and around 400?

I would go with a larger turbocharger for 400whp and around 330ft-lbs. What exhaust manifold? What intake manifold?

Well I am thinking of going with a holset HX35 but haven't settled yet. I have a custom fabbed manifold that looks alot like an SS auto Crap Except the welds are better and its extrude honed, don't ask some idiot I know did it after I told him to just buy a good one. And I just have a stock manifold for now but I think I will get an Edelbrock.

if you look around in the LS-T forums alot of guys are running the 404's or another cam that has reasonable overlap and the rev the **** out of them an get good results

Uh yeah I would say 1200 is a BIG problem. I have a wife and I would like for my ***** to remain between my legs! LOL Besides I found an HX35 on ebay for around 300. Keep the posts coming we are almost to two pages and for the most part it has kept on track with useful info.

I think it'd be pretty sweet to hit 8500 then you have the rev range of a vtec motor.
