I think my oil rings gave out....sigh
...the car runs better than ever but it billows blue smoke now....a sad day for me and my ITR
what would cause something like this?
I pulled off the intake pipe there was some signs of oil but not a whole lot...there's no shaft free play and the wheel spins freely. I use Mobile 1 100% syth 5w-40 grade. The car use to blow little puffs of smoke when boosting but it wasn't so bad. Now it blows smoke heavily at idle.
My questions:
1. Is it my engine oil rings or my turbine?
2. Is the oil I used no good?...hearing conflicting opinions.
3. Is the oil pressure too high (oil feed line) .
4. The car runs great dispite the smoke....is this a costly repair?
thanks

like said above, do a compression test. if the numbers are low, then squirt some oil in each cylinder, and check again. if the numbers go up, then its rings, if they stay the same, its valves.
just yank the plugs with the motor running. if it drops significantly, then you should be in the clear. if it doesn't drop, or drops barely, your rings are burnt.
what I am worried about though, is the fact that you have oil residue in the charge pipe. that is not an idicator of burnt rings...but you say your turbo is fine.
do the home compression test really quick, and then do the numbers test. seems like you're in a pickle...good luck dood

It could be the valve guides or seals. check out this one website for more info -

I agree with other members, do a cylinder leak down test. good luck

Hey, just because the turbine doesn't wiggle back and forth doesn't mean that it still has good seals. My turbo blew out and the turbine didn't wiggle at all!
While your car is idling, pull out the oil dip stick and if blue smoke comes out of that, then your piston rings are shot.

)....I hope it doesn't turnout to be the rings...I ca deal with the turbo oil seals giving out..but the rings...
anyways...I'm gonna pull the plugs tomorrow and look for signs of oil. 5w-40 too thin? Anyone else using this grade? sigh ...

try using 10w40
also.. how many miles are on your car, with and without turbo?

there is definetly something wrong with your car, the weight oil might help stuff, but if your car was running 100% then it wouldnt smoke in the first place. dont prolong the problem, fix it now before things get more expensive to fix. good luck bro.

hmmm...sorry to doubt you BUT I thought that burning oil was burning...whether it be mineral-based or synthetic, if it burns, it'll give off smoke....
burning oil is burning oil, you are correct. what im saying is if your car was running correctly, you woudlnt be spitting out blue smoke. i dont think changing oil to a thicker weight will solve the smoking problem. i hope you fix your problem, good luck

awww nutz, I just got my turbo done and in the morning a little greyish smoke comes out of my tail pipe. According to the FAQ above that means I have bad valve guide seals or something

I'll be back on the 5th of June so I'll hit you up ASAP to Talk about a game plan to fix this problem your having ..?!!
I really can't trouble shoot from on the boat I have to look at the car to see what it's doing.
Also it might be a good Idea to get Mr. Nakagawa involved in this
he's always good for trouble advice
Good Luck Bro

thanks Dave...
I mayhave figured out what the problem is, but haven't had time to try the fix...I can see a couple different problems with my setup..hopefully it works

do you puff white smoke from the breather on your valve cover? if so, then you know your piston rings are shot. blue smoke sounds like the valve guides or seals. Last year i blew my oil seal on my turbo, before it blew completely i had REALLY bad crankcase ventilation and spit out TONS of oil through my breather on the valve cover. Then after an oil change one day, BOHHYAHHHH white smoke EVERYONE, enough to cover a whole interstate. anyways, i hope you fix the prob.
Where does your turbo get its oil from?
Is the return line kinked?
Is the return line fairly large in diameter?
What octane gas do you get over there?
With only 700 miles on the set-up, 10k on the car, and a decent fuel solution, I doubt its the rings that went.
The oil weight that you use seems to be a little thin, try 10w30.
