Default ... blow-by question

... what exactly is it (not much info in search)?... and what is the best way to check for it?... i was told to check for air rushing out of the oil filler at idle... i checked this weekend and i have got crazy amounts of air escaping... i figure this is not good at all... probably work oil rings right?... well if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, lemme know... thanks...

See below from Merriam Webster website http://www.m-w-com/:

Main Entry: blow·by
Pronunciation: 'blO-"bI
Function: noun
Date: 1926
: leakage of combustion gases between a piston and the cylinder wall into the crankcase in an automobile

This is usually due to worn or broken rings or ringlands. Symptoms include high crank pressures which push vapors and air out of the valve cover ports.

I hope the next searcher finds this.

the oil filler or the oil filter?
oil filler (when cap is off)... i.e. - place where you put oil when you change your oil... top left corner of valve cover...

hehe ok...i was gonna say....what the hell

thanks

I dont remember if I read this correctly...but..

say you do a leakdown test..if you have air escaping through the oil filler cap, it means cracked ringlands....piston rings are blown, or cracked cylinder wall.

so my logic would tell me if air is escaping through there at idle, might be the same thing. Does the car idle well?
