Default Block pins?

I've been thinking of doing ths, but I have a ccouple questions.

First, the style I usually see is threaded plugs that go into the block, but I once saw a B18 (member of this boards engine) that had long aluminum rods (~1/2" diameter) placed vertically between the block and sleeve in machined grooves, about every 1 inch or so. Is this a common practice, any more info on it?

Second, where would I purchace either type of pins?

Finally, is either of these still recomended?
