Default Black Smoke when shifting

I was just told I am smoking black smoke when shifting. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Black smoke means you're running rich. What's your setup?

Most of the boosted guys blow black smoke (running rich) between shifts. It's normal, so I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you're blowing blue smoke, which means oil smoke most the time.

put a spark plug in your exhaust tip so you blow flames instead

You can't prevent it unless you don't get on it.

I don't think that's possible. Boosted cars blow black smoke because they need to run on the rich side. And when the driver shifts into the next gear as they released the throttle, there are still unburned fuel left inside the combustion chamber. This equals black smoke. The black smoke will be even worst if you have anti-lag system installed.

Then as the driver gets back on the throttle, the ECU will start dumping fuel again and the car will run rich until the turbo spools once again. This equals black smoke.

The only way to eliminate black smoke is to make the car run at stoich. However, this is dangerous for a turbo car because boost is inconsistent.

agreed. If you want to be sure have one of your friends drive behind to confirm the color. If its blue then you have something to worry about.

Yeah actually you do wanna blow black smoke between shifts, because that means you're getting adequate fuel when you let off the throttle... After boosting in say second gear and you shift, the BOV releases extra air in your piping when the TB closes... Thus, no more air into the motor, but the injectors still dump a little... There's your black smoke...

Black smoke= Unburned Fuel(Rich)
Blue smoke= Burning Oil(Rings, Turbo Seals, Valve Seals etc.)
White Smoke= Coolant in Combustion Chamber(Headgasket, cracked sleeve)
