Best laptop for tuning?
Here's the deal. Years ago I had a windows based os and I got tired of it and decided to move to apple. Now, i'm screwed. I need a windows based os. So, i've decided to make my way to finding a Windows XP unit and not a Vista unit. That is, unless Crome, Hondata, etc., editors can run on vista.
Next thing that bugs me is that when I download ROM editing softwares like Crome or Hondata from their respective websites, how will I know if I need some sort of file or zip software to open such files? Or how do I know if my laptop will open all of the files contained within the downloadable file from the website?
Let me know.

Theres a way to rock Windows on macs. Just download the simulator or whatever that thing is called.
If you do get a used laptop, make sure the battery is good. It really helps out with the street tuning and easing the work of the power inverter.
As for downloading the software, its pretty self explanatory. Just do what your installer tells you to unless you have preferences on where things go. If you do than I assume you know what your doing from here.

I'll reply based on your thread title:
I can't kill my old IBM A30 thinkpad
It's not as metrosexual as an Apple laptop, but it runs all the different software with no issue.

Run "bootcamp" on your mac. Allows you to run windows programs and literally looks exactly like any other PC. I'm pretty sure you can run hondata with it so it's worth looking in to.

If its an Intel based Mac, which I'm guessing it is.

Re: (.dave)
how does bootcamp handle serial com. through windows though? does it use generic drivers? besides, didnt apple declare serial com dead in like 1993? that sounds like a nightmare.. just saying..
Dell has a inspiron 1525 that is hella cheap ($499 brand new) and will work great, and you can get xp or vista on it. xp might cost a bit more, but it will probably be less drama than bootcamp on a mac.
For the record, you should just use whatever you are comfortable with. I run linux for a webserver, windows for tuning, and a mac and flavors of linux at work.. You should use the right tool for the job is what im trying to say.

As in serial ports? I know with Neptune RTP and Hondata S300, you just use a USB cable.

Re: (.dave)
Indeed you do,you use a high speed USB cable on the S300. Probably will only be functional with a system setup such as the s300 or similar because the ROM editors etc are done away with and serial ports aren't used.
