the best gauges alive!
i dont want a gang load of gauges in my car since i want to keep it pretty stock looking inside and out but i am going to go big time turbo in a sleeper car.
on another note i am planning on having the hondata s300 and i really dont want to have any other gauges then what i need so my question is. what are the top 3 most important gauges you think i should have with my setup?

EGT should be a priority for any street driven turbo car. I understand wanting to be sleeper, but gauges should exist to ensure the life of your motor. You gotta do what you gotta do...period.
so why is egt so important? if im driving and if something goes south what do i do then? see that my temp is high and shut off the car? turn it back on and peace out?
true to that you don't need gauges but important ones are boost, oil pressure, egt, and wideband
egt is important because it can confirm the readings of the wideband if you know what your looking for. high heat can be an indication that engine is running lean, cooler tempers would exhibit rich. but some cases egt can display higher than normal heat readings could be that your tune is overly rich (backfires, etc can cause raise in temp), i believe.

Low oil pressure will cause serious damage due to high heat temps.

I currently don't have any of my manuals around here with me at the moment but oil pressure should be:
Idle should be around ~10s psi.
Cruise about ~40s-50s psi.
Full throttle should be approximately ~60-80s psi from what i have seen.
low pressure could be an indication of engine failure, usually if it is low - your going get a sprung bearing. if you look in hanyes manual, the specs should be in there.

Water temp, oil pressure and boost.
The rest are really all tunning tools. Like egt's, afr etc.
If the engine is tuned correctly then there should be no need to really monitor these parametres. It is only when you have issues that they would be checked.
As for the top three mentioned they are things that are checked continuously while driving.

I disagree... I had a fuel pump going on my turbo crx, and I pulled the plugs and they were bone white. Turns out I was leaning the motor out for like a month. I would have known right away if I had a wideband or EGT gauge.
Oil press and boost are def needed, because there is no way to monitor it. I have always found the factory water temp to be good enough. When it goes above 210F, you can tell, and he will be datalogging with s300.

I dont know if this helps, but because i use my car on track you dont have enough time to check all the necessary gauges all the time (personally oil press being the most important), and if you are spending all your time checking gauges, youre not looking at the track..
I made a 2x16 character display and a PIC, this shows all the information graphically, you dont need to watch it all the time- it displays an audio/visual alarm when a value is too high/low...
Pretty good for my use...

i forget what defi actually calls it...but they make one unit that can display multiple parameters....and no it's not the $2k gauge cluster they make....it works with the control unit. . .
I don't have any guages except for a WB. Sometimes I wish I had a boost gauge but it's really not necessary. If my motor was worth something I would have an oil pressure gauge because it might give you a chance to save it before things get really expensive.
so probably for you I would recommend a WB and a oil pressure gauge

I have boost oil and Wideband/EGT combo, I would recommend just those if you have to have some, but you don't need any of them IMO, at least in very visible spots. When you've got the hammer down, you're not looking at gauges, even if they're right in your face. I occasionally find myself taking a quick glance at them but when winding out 3rd my eyes are on the road.
