Default Best alterntive to a filter on the compressor

ive been trying to figure out what screen would be the best to serve its purpose instead of a filter. from solar screen cutouts to mesh from a grocery store strainer, what do you guys use ? thanks

How cn you not runa a proper filter? Moutnnig the turbo both directinos should still gahve room for a filter. If the compressor is on passenger side and the fan shroud is in the way. Just get a thin fan and if yuo ahve to monut it on the front. Whats ypur setup? I've ahrdly ever seen a a setup taht couldn't fit a filter.

i didnt mean it couldnt. i just wanted to use a screen. my friend with a precision sc61 got better results [butt dyno] that way than an intake.

It's been dyno proven that an intake arm on the preturbo side does provide gains rather then jsut a mesh or filter right on the turbo tho. Although open turbo does sound neat :D

Just grab a mesh metal filter out of a lemonade strainer

There like $1.99 for a large 3" diamter on, $.50 for a clamp and your good, and it sounds sick ****

Im not gonna bother running an intake, thats for sure

If you've ever eaten up a turbo driving through dust, you'll change your mind over not running a filter. Gains of a screen are virtually nothing compared to a good filter.

Exactly, why risk wrecking the turbo for a little more HP? Just run a filter and turn the boost up a little.

I bought a bunch of metal screen material from Lowes when I first put my turbo on and couldn't find a filter yet...

I have a bunch left, I'd give it to you if you were local... you can have it if you want to pay shipping on it, although, it will probably be more than it's worth...

for what the realistic diference in performance may be, i would stick with a filter for street driving. it will protect the turbine much better.
just an idea but if you want to do something different, why not try fabricating a CAI that would put the filter outside the engine bay. it has been done and i would think that would be better for performance. just a thought

no actualy puting the filter in front of the wheel well like where a N/A CAI would place it.

you could go all out and fabricate a duct that houses the filter and mounts behind a vent in the front bumper that would give you a ram air set up.

Go get you a piece of window screen from a hardware store. About a six inch square piece should work. Go and dig in your underware drawer. Wala filter material, works great. One of my budies told me to use panty hose, but I had better access to undies.

Nice...

Be careful which cloth you choose though for your filter... I used a section of an old fleece blanket that I had laying around .... you can see it here...

But, it was choking my turbo and I couldn't reach full boost... it just wasn't allowing enough air through it for my turbo to funciton properly... I replaced it with a filter and solved the problem...

I'm not saying that underwear or whatever won't work, just be careful to choose a fabric that will flow enough air... although I don't know how you could test for something like that!...

Edelbrock sells squares of foam filter material that can be cut and used with a screen...

i really want to run a filter on mine. i dont have the spare cash at the moment though i will soon to have like an S pipe made to fit for a filter. i have an sc61 on a blox manifold compressor facing passenger and i have slim rad fan. i cant get a filter on that to save my life, the clutch line gets in the way more than anything i think.

if you guys make a bubble out of the mesh it makes more surface area for the turbo to draw air from, not like the mesh has any restrictions anyways

Check out UNI filters... they are for motorcycles but work well in turbo applications because they come in a ton of sizes...

I couldn't find a small enough filter for my turbo for a while... because my compressor is on the driver's side and I don't have much room between the compressor, power steering pump, and the frame rail...

I found a UNI filter that is perfect for my application, 2.5" inlet and 4" long, they had many different shaps and sizes but this one worked for me...

wheres the thread for this one? sounds werid, unless the turbo is right infront of the radiator sucking in that hot air

i once took my stock air box filter apart and stretched the filter material straight and put it over the turbo and clamped it on.
it seemed to work ok, then i was driving and i heard a slight pop, so i stopped and popped the hood and the turbo had cut a perfect circular hole around the filter and it was hanging on by just a thread of filter material, almost sucked it right into the turbo.
not smart on my part.

ive got a k&n filter now but i plan on using just a screen this summer from home depot or whatever.

I've been using window screen from home depot since I installed my turbo, ran for 40k then i drove it with a fuel problem and melted a piston, when took off the head was surprised as to how clean the cylinders were, they were basically clean and brand new looking, very low carbon buildup. my theory is if it gets past the small holes of the screen then it has to make it through the compressor blades then if it doesn't get blown out by the bov then it goes in the engine, but then it would have already been chewed up and digested, lol, and is basically non existant, so window screen from home depot and its real cheap,
