Default Benson Offset Bore LS Block

Here are the promised pix on the Bensons offset bore block. Dan is still the best sleeve installer in the business as well as being the original Honda innovator.
Don't ask me how the offset is done or how much it costs. This block is currently sitting at 86mm. Not saying where it will end at.
What happens is a wider rod is offset ground on one side to the proper width for the crank journal. This centers the rod in the cylinder bore again while keeping the crank stock.
I would assume the combustion chambers would have to customized as well as some modifications to the piston. A special Cometic gasket will be used.

The reason you would use an offset block would be for the simple fact that you can use a wider rod? Also would this allow the block to be stroked using the stock crank?

Damn those sleeves are thick---Thick then I have probably ever seen.

the reason is to run a bigger bore piston than normally possible.

That's what we're working on for a car for next year. By doing an offset bore, you can go with a bigger bore and still have some meat left between cylinders. It's alot of work, but it's just another little advantage over the next guy

I wonder what the maximum bore for an all-motor app could possibly be?

86 is pretty damn big for a sleeve with that much meat left in it...geez. Looks like a pretty big boost setup could still run 86-87mm safely...awesome!

Imagine the day someone does offset bore sleeves that are like an inch taller for use w/ a deckplate. Imagine a 1" deck plate, 97-98mm crank, 87mm bore on 25lbs of boost from a massive turbo...oooooh.

The #1 and #4 pistons are furthur out from the center than they would normally be. They are using special 'offset' rods on the #1 and #4 cylinders to accomplish this.

Looking at the big end of the rods lined up, from the side.

Cool pic, but it looks like #2 and #3 are not offset? The pic of the block looks like the "meat" between each sleeve is the same.

I'm still not sure how this works.

going with an offset bore will leave plenty of material on the side of the cylinder so that you wont run into headgasket sealing problems

I don't have all the answers on this set-up but it is DEFINITELY not for turbo applications. It is going into an all motor race car where the extra size really helps. Most turbo cars have more power than they need already.

there is always room for more power. now if someone could run this by me one more time, why this is a bad setup for turbo?

#1 and #4 Rods will not take the pressure reliably... maybe low boosted apps?

Yeah, it looks like that if the pressure was too great it would torque the offsetted cylinder pistons into the cylinder - or torque the rods themselves. I hope this isn't the case and that it works according to plan- innovation is key.
