Basic Knowledge for some....how do I....
Ok, ive decided on either an 83 or an 84mm sleeve.
this may be a completely NEWBIE question, but thats what im here for. so if this is basic knowledge for some, help me out.
HOW do i match the correct piston to the sleeve. i am under the assumption that an 84mm sleeve will only fit an 84mm Piston. and an 83mm sleeve will only fit an 83mm piston. is this correct?
you wouldnt put an 83mm piston in an 84mm sleeve would you? this would leave you with a 1mm gap right?
basically how do i know what size piston fits in a sleeve?

Generally, an 84 mm piston will not fit in an 84mm sleeve right out of the box. The clearances will be too tight.
So, you get your pistons and with your pistons will come a spec sheet that says what the wall clearance should be. Then a machine shop will bore/hone the cylinder to be (size of piston + wall clearance) and voila, you have an exact fit.

i think im gonna go either 83 or 84mm sleeves. then im either gonna go with JE or Arias pistons. BUT how do i pick the piston!!! please someone helpppppppppppp im getting discouraged!

You take the block and the piston and bring it to the machine shop and let them do the magic. Here's the tricky part, you gotta tell them the clearances(piston to wall) etc. Everyone has their own numbers! Or you can simply follow what the piston manufactor says to do, that will work too. There is machine shop work that needs to be done after you get it back from sleeving.

Contact Darton or someone who uses Darton sleeves to get an exact answer.
If it were me, I'd get the 84mm sleeves and get 84.25mm pistons. Bore/hone the sleeve and get an exact fit. Done.
You need to get clarification on the Darton sleeves though.
My Endyn pistons measured 75.286mm at the skirt (d series engine). The piston to wall clearance was .003" aka 0.762mm. So, my machinist took the sum of the piston skirt and the stated clearance to arrive at the final size to bore/hone the block to.

I just ordered from Darton. I just told them I'm running 84.5mm pistons. They said they will ship them about .008 under. Just figure out what size PISTONS you want to use first. Next, call Darton and tell them the size you choose......(they give you a sleeve that's close) Bring them both to your machine shop and give them the clearence specs per the piston's manufacturer and they will bore your sleeves to spec. Assemble motor, go fast. Thats it!
By the way, the sleeves you buy from darton are not meant to be used out of the box. If you were gonna put them in for stock bore pistons, after the sleeves have been installed, the bore is a seperate step..it must be done. You wont get an 84mm piston in an 84mm darton sleeve without bore/hone. This is what darton told me. The sleeve they send you is just a starting point..and the $420 you send them nor the machine costs to install the sleeves will include the bore/hone.
