Banjo Downpipe?
So I was browsing through one of my turbocharger books Turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes (an older book, talks a lot about carbuerators and stuff). Anyway, I noticed in the exhaust section that he talks about Banjo style downpipes. Basically the idea is that if you don't have enough room to fit a properly sized bend onto the turbine housing, you can make a downpipe that looks like a banjo fitting for a water hose or something. He has a picture of some 360cid Buik motor with this set-up. It's really interesting because instead of a big fat elbow, there is a banjo fitting that is only as wide as the turbine housing itself.
I did a little searching and didn't see anything about this one here. Anyway, I was wondering why no one has tried this method for the guys who want to keep their A/C. I'll try to find you a diagram or a picture or something, but I thought it was worth discussing in here. Anyone know what I'm talking about here?

Well, I did a quick Google search and this was the only result I could find. There are no pictures, but these Mazda 323 guys are talking about the same thing.

I saw a down pipe with some thing like that the other day on here. It was like a small rectangel box with a v-band on the side that then turned into the downpipe. I will look for it again
I've seen that as well. This is a little differnt though. Think of a downpipe that connects with a V band, but is the same size as the turbine housing, you know, like a banjo fitting. I think the reason that this works is because there is enough space to keep flow decent, but I'm not positive, which is why I'm asking here.
i think it would have horrible flow..i definitely wouldnt want it on a turbo car...even if its a 3"+ banjo the air coming out of the turbo is still going to basically run into a wall then get pushed out..i think it will cause alot of unwanted backpressure....you can always get exhausts to fit with the right setup (manifold, turbo, ect)

Well, is there anyone that actually knows anything about them? I mean, they aren't very common, so they can't flow better than a standard downpipe, but I'm just curious how close they are.
no one knows anything about them because no one uses them..that should tell you something right there...with as much hassle as people go through to have turbo with a/c and p/s..if this was a good option it would have been used before

They've obviously been used before, or else they wouldn't exist. I realize that they aren't as good as a regular downpipe, BUT, in cases where you just CAN NOT fit a regular downpipe there, I want to know how well the stack up.
I thought it'd be obvious that it'd be much easier (and more comfortable) to just use a banjo style downpipe, than it would be to start removing creature comforts.

whats that use, a v-band?....if thats what hes talking about using, i wouldnt consider it a banjo..works nothing like banjo fittings for water/oil lines

Thanks for the post, I've seen that before, but that's not really what I'm talking about. It's literally like a banjo fitting. Think of it as having the top of the DP be shaped like a hollowed out turbine housing, that's what they look like. However, it is the same idea as the picture you linked to. Thanks for the effort.
