is it bad running without chargepipe connected?
i just had my engine overhauled and i'm breaking it right now. i don't like putting back the turbo until the break-in period is over, but i'm running an open header right now coz the exhaust pipe was made especially for my downpipe.
since it's an open header, you could imagine how loud it is and it is getting very annoying so i'm thinking of putting my turbo back in and stay out of boost so i ask my mechanic about my plan and he said i can put back the turbo but leave the chargepipe out and use seperate intake on the t/b and just put a filter on the compressor inlet. will this setup damage the turbo? if so, in what way and why?
any help will be appreciated.

You shoulden't have any problems there, just don't boost the turbo thats all. Also make sure you have all the charge and intake pipes filtered so you don't suck in any unwanted items.
You obviously still have to hook the oil lines and what not up to the turbo just as if you were going to boost.

Is there any particular reason why people dont break in cars under boost? When you buy a new turbo car from the factory, you break it in under boost. I would be more concerned with washing out the cylinders due to a rich condition and keeping the motor out of high boost, high rpm situations.
your gonna wanna take out the wastegate spring cuz u don't want to overspin the turbo.
Your turbo will spin to infinity and beyond. You will need to somehow make the wastegate see boost or just remove it completely, but then you will again have a loud exhaust. I say just leave it how it is.

don't drive the car w/o the charge piping connected or you'll over rev your turbo and burn it up. I'd just drive it open header for a while till you get a few hundred miles on it then slap on the turbo for the remaining breakin time, just dont boost heavily and you'll be fine.
i don't get why i should take the wastegate off if i won't be boosting.
anyway, just to be on the safe side i guess i'll just go with the open header.
thanks guys.

so is it better to break the engine in with boost? just don't boost that often?
i've read in a thread here about breaking in an engine, some say it's better to break it in with boost..some say don't boost..so which is the right thing to do?

There is nothing wrong with breaking in your motor with the turbo on!! Just be easy on it just like you would with n/a and ease into boost as the milage goes up. There have been tons of posts regarding the pros of breaking in your motor with the turbo on, AEBS advised me on how to break my motor in with mine on and it runs flawlessly, no smoke, no oil.
Now, if your A/F is not set right and you detonate while seating your rings it will screw it up, so keep that in mind.
