backfires
ok i have a ea82t turbo subaru wagon(i know im at the wrong site, but people here are smart) any way when i am getting on my car after i shift it back fires into the turbo, will this hurt anything. also my up pipe has a big exhaust leak in it, now i know this will hurt the spooling but but is it possible that because its losing the back pressure that that is whats making it back fire.
ps, ive already done a complete tune up and adjusted the timing to manufacturer recomendations. also i run 93 octane gas.

Re: backfires (ross1459)
i noticed that after my car was tuned, i tend to hear my engine backfiring from the exhaust when i shift gears normally.... i thought this was unusual because it never happened in my last setup last yr....

i would say that the leak in your up pipe introduces fresh air into the exhaust stream and makes it easier to ignite. and the whole turbo thing, yes it could damage the turbo after a while doing it. rally racers use a system that injects a little more fuel into the engine whenever they shift, and that causes a fireball to go across the turbine nad keep the turbo spooled, which is why if you ever watch the wrc's you can always see a little fire ball each time they shift, they call it the pop-pop system. it is known under harsh situations to melt the turbine cause it gets so hot, but it is unlikely that it would happen to you. but over time it could kill your thrust bearing. but i wouldnt worry about it...just fix your up pipe. that alone will make your car feel alot peppier just from the lack of exhaust making it to the turbo.
