Default b18b vs b16

Hey guys I am building a turbo crx and am buying an engine to do it with. Goal is around 250whp. nothing crazy. Which engine is better for boost. I tried searching but came up with nothing.

250whp will be no problem with a b16... otherway... b18 has more low-end torque... so if you have the money get a b18

on 8 lbs with a STOCK B16 motor u will be making about 235 whp. i wouldnt go above 8 lbs of boost on a stock B16 motor. on a STOCK LS motor u will make around 250 on 10psi. the LS motor would be more better/safer for boost. plus u will get ALOT more tq compared to the B16 motor

You can't go wrong with either one.

If you are thinking about swapping in a B16 into your CRX I'm guessing you're looknig at first gen B16's? if so then you'll want to get it compression tested and maybe even do a leakdown test on it before you boost it. Chances are it will be in bad shape or have high mileage so it wont be able to make a lot of power. Before you drop the motor in you should think about swapping out the pistons and rods. At least that way you know you can handle 300-400 WHP no problems.

I'd go with the B16. It has a better head and tranny. I also like the powerband of the B16 a lot better.

As far as being compression friendly. The b18b is the way to go hands down, however, with good tuning any motor will be great boost candidates. Comparing the b18b against the b16a is a really tough comparison. Both are very potent and stout motors.

The advantage that the b16a has over the b18b is only topend power. For which the b18b makes up for a lot in the midrange. In most circumstances, lb for lb of boost, the b16a will always make more hp to the wheels, but the b18b will always dominate in the torque numbers. For me, that is a tradeoff and a preference that I am willing to take over the b16a.

I dont' argue that the head is better, however the tranny is "easily" interchangeable opposed to swapping to a vtec head.

In the end however, I think it will be a drivers battle when it comes to comparing the two motors in a drag race. Both have advantages and disadvantages that pretty much cancel each other out.

Yea i would be looking at a first gen B16. You really think it will be in that bad of shape? I will definately have it compression tested and have a leakdown test. Anyone know the acceptable range for compression on a first gen b16? What are acceptable numbers for the leak down test?

I made 231whp/206wtq on 8psi with a b18b...i would imagine the b16a making a little more whp on 8psi.

Get a B16 and swap in some itr or gsr cams and you wont look back. Be sure to get cam gears and a good tuner. The cams help make up for a lot of the B16s midrange in boosted applications.

Uhh no....I can imagine the ITR cams making a little bit more hp and a little bit more torque, but the stroke of the b16a is still the weakest link in torque no matter what you do to the head and or valvetrain. And I honestly can't imagine how the GSR cams will help, especially since the b16a cams are actually a little more aggressive than the GSR(not by much, but still more aggressive).

I stand corrected, however, the weakest link to torque for the b16a is still it's stroke.

damn i made just about what you did but on 10 psi.

honestly for a street car i would go with an ls, just because of its midrange. couple that with a 60 trim t3 or a 50 trim t3/t4 and it should pull like a bastard in the midrange and you wont have to rev it out to make top power. if you were looiking to make peak power, the b16 would be a better choice.

just whatever motor you choose, get some decent fuel management, or else neither motor will really last long

the #1 problem for a street-driven boosted honda is traction. the b16 will get you out of the hole much faster because of minimal traction losses. and 8 lbs. of boost from 4k to 8k is very fun even for a stock motor.

I have turbo b16 and I love it, but it really sucks gas, I would amagine that the b18 would be a bid more fuel effeicent while just cruising.

I would get the b16, then down the road, buy an Ls short block and build an Ls vtec. Then you will have the best of both worlds.

I have a bone stock b16a making 275whp and 11psi. No problems here and its fun as hell to drive. I vote b16

It sounds like noone has taken price into consideration. Unless I'm mistaken, the b16 will cost 2x as much as the B18 and you could put the savings into internals or an LSD... That's the way I'd go if I didn't already have a B18b...

Actually I was feeling the b16 would be less. Heres my reasoning and help me out if im wrong.

I can get a b16, tranny, ecu, axles, everything but the shift linkage and motor mounts for 1300.
I can get JUST A b18b for 950, then i need axles, ecu, tranny and motor mounts ect. Im not sure how much the trannies are going for but i think it would end up to be more in the end.

Also another thing i just realized. The b18b is OBD1 while the b16 is OBD0. Now for engine management and fuel tuning and all that would i need to convert to OBD1 anyway? What program would i use on th b16? Are there any OBD0 programs? Thanks

Yeah. I guess if you were in Cali with an OBD2 car things would be different. The prices would be much higher when looking for an OBD2 B16 and you need to have the same year or higher to get a swap smogged.
