Default B18B

I'm thinking about pruchasing a b18b this spring with plans of going turbo next summer. What advantages, over lets say, getting a b18c, would I encounter with the non vtec ls?

gear ratios are longer, easier turbo application than vtec, what else?

also, what internals can I improve after the swap, before I go turbo, to help prepare? thanks for the help

longer gear ratios make you slower
vtec doesnt really interfere with turbo

new pistons, new rods, perhaps sleeve the block......

Gear ratios are dependant on the engine's powerband. NA honda engines with small power bands need the super short gearing to keep the car moving. When you radically increase the amount of available horsepower as well as the size of the usable powerband you can have longer gear ratios to take advantage of the extra power.

A JDM 4.785 FD for example woud be useless with a turbo, you would go through the gears so quickyly you wouldnt be able take full advantage of the turbo's powerband. Thats why you see so many turbo H22s with accord ratios, and factory turbo cars with long ratios, its all about top end, the extra power pulls you the expanded powerband plenty fast.

Plenty of people turbo b18c's as well as b18b's. A b18b would probably be less headaches to tune.

I agree, honda powerbands are too short to take advantage of the longer gearing.. U need to keep the motor between 6k-8k and the LS tranny will not do that.. although an LS turbo makes power from 5k-7k and my torque peak is around 5200 so my LS tranny seems to do just fine.. The LS puts out more midrange which is why i think we can get away with the LS tranny..

i will always vote for the LS motor when u r going turbo from scratch.. ive had good experiences with mine and they seem to make good power and be very stout as well.. also they are half the price

but if your going all out go for the built turbo GSR, youll be faster in the long run..

for the price you cannot beat b18b. if you got alittle more cash invest in b20b. that 84mm bore and massive torque is awesome.

What other modifications did you go with before you installed the turbo? Any other internals? Cam gears? Rods? Injectors? anything i can get to help prepare for the turbo, or make the isntallation easier?

just upgraded my oil return line, bosch inline fuel pump, ACT clutch, and thermal 3" exhaust..

That is a pretty general question. It all depends on what you want to get out of the turbo setup, if 7-8psi is plenty then the stock injectors and FMU would be fine. That would be a real quick car. If your trying to go for a pretty serious build up and want to run 12 or so you need to upgrade injectors and get a good FMU. Boosting an LS is all about getting fuel to it. Fuel and tuning will let you run 10-12psi pretty safely. You need to evaluate a budget too, it can expensive real quick. I dont think upgrading the connecting rods would be necessary until u are boosting more than 12psi. But you could do it just to be safe, there is nothing wrong with that. Cam gears are a must to dial in cam timing to hold that boost in and really make some power.
