Default audi wastegates??

I'm doing a budget build and saw an audi wastegate... the flange would be different than the one on my manifold, but I was thinking I could weld an adapter on ...

anyways, that being said, anybody ever seen one of these external gates run? is this a reasonable idea?

Yes. Although they are big and stupid they work very well and in good shape will withstand anything shy of a direct nuclear blast. When modded you can also adjust the tension on the spring to eliminate the need for an external boost controller. If you end up using one I already have inlet and outlet flanges for them in your choice of material.
