ATTN: Turbo B18C (Type-R) owners! Question...
Hey everybody. Well I finally decided to buy a daily driver and now I want to turbo my Type-R motor. I know plenty of people with B16 turbos and LS-turbo, etc, etc, but no one with an actual turbo Type-R motor.
My question is for you turbo Type-R guys: In your experience, how does the stock form of the motor hold up with boost?
I'm not looking for a lot of power, probably just around 300-350+whp, and although it won't be my daily driver, it will get driven more than just weekends...and since this is my baby I would like it to last without having to limit it only a weekend driver.
Can I reliably make my target whp without upping the internals (rods, pistons, valvetrain, etc.)? And as far as my tranny goes, how are you guys liking the boost with the short gears?
I've already got other things like an aftermarket LSD, fuel management, etc. figured out, but I just wanted to know what your guys' experiences have been like with a turbo Type-R w/ stock-internals. Thanks
Motor is a
1997 JDM B18C Type-R w/ the 4.4FD LSD tranny.

Re: ATTN: Turbo B18C (Type-R) owners! Question... (Screwtape:)
B18C is a Jap Spek GSR motor no ???? or at least i was under that impression .... i have a B18C and had it boosted both stock and then i took it out and fully-built it and is now boosted again. stock it holds up pretty good i had no complaints. pistions are fine, but the rods are the question.... normally they say the stock rods are fine until about 300 whp, 350 pushing it, although there are many a people who on H-T have done upwards of 350WHP on stock rods efficiently.

I boosted a pretty stock JDM GSR for over a year. The only thing I had was forged pistons, I used stock rods the entire time 10psi daily beaten the hell out of.
IMHO the stock piston ring/ringlands will go before the rod does.
When I pulled out the rods/pistons to do a complete build, everything looked just fine still.

The ringlands will go before the rods do.
Sub 300hp should be fine, any more and you're in trouble.

Re: ATTN: Turbo B18C (Dr Pooface)
i had my b18c boosted 10 psi with 336whp on mustang dyno. the ringlands in one piston went, 90 psi compression in that cylinder. Im pretty sure the tune was fine, because the guy who tuned it has a 600+ civic thats lasted 3 years so far.
336 was almost to much on the sreet imo, because of the wheelspin, i could just spin from a roll in second by mashing the gas. Everyone says 300 is the majic number?
I think the gearing is fine with the boost, i had stock lsd and it held up while the car was turbo'd.
when i pulled the enine apart everything looked fine minus the two pieces of piston that fell out , just glad they didnt come loose into my head/turbo.

Re: ATTN: Turbo B18C (skunkwhat)
I have had my JDM B18C type R boosted for about 2 years. DEPENDING on how the tuner tunes it, the engine for the most part should be reliable. I am on 7 psi with boost creep up to 9psi. The boost creep is due to my 3" exhaust but with the old 2.5" exhaust I had perfectly steady boost...... too big of turbo now with less restriction. I have done absolutely nothing to the motor. Now on to the short tranny....how about 4.785 final drive for yeah. I love my tranny with a passion. I boost so fast with the 11:1 compression then with the tranny I am constantly in my power band. If you have any questions PM me.
