Default ATTN: LS TURBO owners!

just curious guys...

whats mods are you using in a simple fmu and fuel pump setup? i want to see what everyone here has to say about their experience, so it will benefit other LS turbo owners. especially for those without stand alone systems.

-what mods?
-what ignition timing?
-what type of plugs?
-any gains noticed when switching from 2.5 exhaust to 3?
-any noticable gains using MSD ignition systems?
-cam gears? list timing for intake/exhaust for some comparisons
-noticable power with injectors and lowered fmu ratio?
-other experiences that improved power?!

this would help other owners tune their car and point out tuning that mayb have been overlooked. especially me! THANKS GUYS.

I dont have a Drag kit but it's all the same.
-custom turbo kit
-type R intake manifold
-15 degrees
-NGK ZFR6F-11
-never had 2.5
-had MSD before turbo
-stock cam gears
-upped the boost to 10 after 310's and 8:1 disk

turbointeg95:

have you used the step 7 plugs? if you have, did you notice the power difference between the 6 and 7 step plugs? cuz i used to run my turbo on stock 5 plugs and stock timing... and my car pulled a hell of a lot faster with that combo. now that i got step 7 plugs and i still run on stock timing... it feels not too quick as it used to be. imagine if i retard my timing.. it'll get slower.

I tried the 7 plugs once but my car doesnt detonate so there's really no need for me to run them. I just run one step for safety. The main reason though is because the 6 plugs are about $5 for all four and the 7's are more then twice as much and I change my plugs all the time. It really shouldnt make that much of a difference, the main thing is the timing.

daym.. i need me some hotter plugs... 7 aint cuttin it. might go 6. where do you get your plugs? cuz i have to special order em from the daym import shop. they usually carry 7 but i dont wanna use those cold plugs no more. i should go back to 5... hehe

heres my setup, 184 whp.(im currently running too rich)

drag G-III kit
using the second pump and fmu
7 heat range plugs, gapped at .032
ngk wires
stock timing
WS exhaust, with no cat
open dump tube

additional stuff- blitz, egt and boost gauge. autometer oil pressure gauge. Greddy turbo timer.

- Custom Turbo w/Air-Liquid IC
- Variable with APEXi, -6 to -10
- NGK ZFR7F-11
-Just 2.5"
- Don't use MSD, i hear they crap out a lot
- didn't bother with CAM adjustments
- Run stock fuel pressure with 550cc achieved more power easily over my old setup of FMU and stock injectors [w/APEXi AFC (but not recommended), get a standalone]
- Junked the CAT, made lots of power with a quicker spoolup.

MDA,

what boost are you running on? and what do you have in place of the cat? notice power at high end?

i was thinkin about changin the whole fmu stock injector setup and go wit a lower ratio and injectors too. i havent heard too many bad things about MSD... i had one on my other car.. it seemed fine... i just like the retard feature.

have you timed your car yet?

I've been running it at 10lbs since last october... I got another CAT and punched it out .... the turbo spooled much faster ... quite a cheap way to get better performance...

Don't really have any times that i care to share since i've been plagued with compressor size problems and once i resolved that made so much more power that i smoked my already aftermarket kevlar clutch...

But it's all back together now.. and it boots... Just gotta keep that wheel spin/hop under control.... was investigating those radius arms.... and also my shocks suk... damn o-rings keep giving out .....

Ive been boosting for about 12,000 miles now on my custom setup at 7psi and all I have for fuel is the endyne modified bosch pump and 12:1 vortech FMU. Im running colder plugs and 15 degrees timing. My Exhaust temps stay around 750c cruising at get around 800c when I boost all the way through 4th. Very solid setup so far with very little addons.

so is 15 degree timing with step 6 plugs pretty much the best set up for an LS?

quick RPM-why are u only pushing 184 whp? i thought drag3 LS's would push about 220whp..

ck out my dyno numbers under post "dyno results". Im running way too rich. With the fuel problem away i should get 20+ more horses. 210 is more reasonable @ 7psi.

cool, i thought i was the only one running stock timing. everyone seems to be retarded to 14 or 15 deg.

so what did they recommend to fix the rich mixture youre getting? lower fmu rate and injectors?

and the DRAG 3 kit also uses 12:1 ratio.

have you thought about dynoing your car?

and MDA,

i was thinkin about punching out a stock cat too. hehehe cant get a hold of one up here. i might just punch mine out and worry about gettin a stock one for smog later. im also lookin into better traction solutions. i hate wheel hop! wheel hop and turbo lag = automatic defeat off the line.

im still trying to figure out how to lean it. I believe i have 10:1 right now. which would be running leaner 8:1, or 12:1. I dont know much about fmu's, blah.

yeah Id hate to think how it would feel with timing @15, stock is kind of sluggish. I hope leaning out solves that problem.

well, im going to get my car dyno'd next monday. the guys at the dyno are pretty known for knowing their **** about turbo'd integs. so i pretty much have the same setup as you... so what i find out should be beneficial for the both of us. they know their ****.. so im sure they'll have a solution to our air/fuel problem.

the dyno up here has a wideband o2 sensor here. thats probably why they are charging $120 an hour. $65 for tuning as well. $185 total for an hour. DAYM!

i know at so cal... ATOMIC performance are known for their dyno tuning over there. you should hit them up.

6 series plugs
no cat (test pipe)
airtex inline pump + stock pump
stock injectors
12:1 fmu
Apexi WS exhaust
Open dumptube
14 deg timing
Been running this way for ~15k miles now, without a hiccup.

Runs pretty rich, but it'll have to stay that way for now, im pretty much broke. I am super happy with this set-up though. Although the spool up could be a little quicker...but that's due to my non-straight through 60mm Apexi exhaust.
