Default ARP stud retorque question

When you retorque ARP headstuds, do you back them off at all or just tighten them back down?

If you are replacing the headgasket, later down the road will you have to retighten them again or are they already stretched?

thank you
Sebastian

You dont back them down at all...you just torque them more(i think 10ft/lbs more..)

Also i think you need to retorque them again after you change headgaskets.

all you would have to do is retorque to spec thats all there no need to do anything else they have stretched after you use them but i sually buy new a new set everytime we do a build up 115 is cheap for some hardware that will make sure you head doesnt lift

Well they have been on for about... 500 miles, thats all. I dont have the money to buy new ones right now so Im going to stick with the ones i got.

after i replace the headgasket, I will torque them down to spec....than like 250 or so miles later retorque them? how should I schedule the retorque?

After 10 heat cycles you retorque them again. This is when the car comes up to full heat, then cools down again. 10x like that. You dont loosen then tighten, you just torque them down more. You'll find that they back off around 5-10ft-lbs.

Bringing this back from the dead...since i cannot find a concrete answer.

i get the idea that it should be retorqued if they are BRAND NEW, but what about re-used ones? Cannot find the difinitive answer on retorqueing the re-used headstuds.

thanks

Assuming that the used studs have never been over torqued, then you should treat them just like new studs. Once studs, or bolts have been torqued beyond their rating, they lose their tensile properties.
