Yes, you still use the dowel pins. Just make sure to check dowel height against the dowel hole depths before bolting it together.
If the dowels are too long, grind them down to the correct height. You do not want them impeeding the cylinder head from seating to the block correctly. (more noticable if the deck and cyl face have been surfaced/milled)

hmmm. well mine arent in.. when the motor was built we forgot to put them back in. That why im wondering if its throwing off my gasket and head alignment just a hair and causing the detonation problem im having. Maybe the gasket is off a **** hair and hangs just into the cylinder. The metal ring may cause detonation. This sound stupid or can it happen? My timing is WAY back. Plug good, wires good, cleaned rotor and cap dont know what the hell is causing it.

anyone else have opinions? this my detonation problem? i hate to pull the head if thats not the problem
