arias ring gap
hey i have a set of 9:1 .020 over...i need to find a ring gap to you. ive head many but not sure what to go one. Earl gave me .018 TOP and .020 BOTTOM. just checkin to see what ppl are running and any sujestions?
old skool thinking used to say .018" upper and .013" middle but now most builders set the second ring gap a few thou looser than the upper. Came out of Nascar research on what happens to pressure passing the top ring. You want it to continue down the piston and not turn around and unseat the upper ring.
I still think the rule of thumb of .006" of gap per inch of bore for the upper ring works great.
Some people still think the second ring has to do with compression control but it is actually for additional oil control. If it is installed up side down, it will actually push oil into your combustion chamber rather than keep it out of where it should not be.
