ARIAS Piston to Wall Clearance?
Im building my 83mm B18 with Arias pistons. I've installed two and Im worried about the piston movement withing the sleeves. Can you see from the video if this amount of movement looks ok? The guy that machined the block says he used the clearance guide that came with the pistons. He had the pistons with him to match each sleeve. Thoughts?
Thanks

you need more clearnace. depending on if they are high or low silicone they could expand alot. i would change the clearance. .3 is just wrong.

Re: ARIAS Piston to Wall Clearance?
Im trying to check clearance but its hard to get accurate numbers with the tools I have. I'll find some other gauges. Arias says it should it be .0040. Anyone else runing tighter like the .0025-.0035 mentioned above? Ill be running about 500whp

looks about normal...i have seen many forged pistons rock back and fourth in the bore at TDC.
just ask your machinist exactly how much clearance they have....it should be at least what the piston manufacture recommends.

Re: ARIAS Piston to Wall Clearance?
If I recall correctly, Honda recommends (on a D-series, not sure if its the same for anything else) 0.0004 - 0.0016 P2W Clearance. Like I said previously, mine are at 0.003 but I told my engine builder I was shooting for around 300-350whp.
As in "solid as a rock", I meant they have absolutely no movement in them. I can't say for sure that yours are too loose, but in my opinion, it doesn't look right.
Good luck!

Re: ARIAS Piston to Wall Clearance?
This is interesting. Arias says the 84s should be 3.307 and yours are less. I'm finding the same thing. Im mm, Arias says mine should be 83.01 and they are about 82.82 and my sleeve bore is at 82.93. .1mm = .004" right? So it seems my machine shop did it correctly?

Im not sure if Ds are different than Bs. I know Honda's recommendations no longer matter when youre dealing with an aftermarket piston. All I know is Arias recommends .0040. I called them and they told me since Ill be running 25-30psi I can go another half thousands more. So maybe .003 works for 300whp and .0045 works for 500whp? Makes sense I guess. At least I hope

Re: ARIAS Piston to Wall Clearance?
Those pistons are low silicone and should be run up around .0035-.0045 depending on your build. The rocking is normal and happens with every piston because there tapered, so don't listen to retards who think they can judge clearance by the vid.
Slap it together and run it!!!! If you really distrust your machinest then you'll have to take the slugs out and bring everything to another shop to be measured.
What sleeves are you running? They look like they were chizzled in with woodworking tools.

The sleeves are a long story. To be honest I dont know what kind they are. I think LA sleeves with some sort of welded in block guard crap. They are ghetto but they lasted for 15,000 miles at 430whp. That's why im building it on my own this time! I paid a shop for golden eagle sleeves and got this crap ALONG WITH a different turbo than I bought. Big time B.S.!! The block cleaned up nicely though. Here are before and after shots. Im going to start a build thread later today.

Re: ARIAS Piston to Wall Clearance?
Looks like normal amount of play to me from the video. there should definatly be movement as your using low silicon content pistons which means more expansion at higher power levels. depending on power level is where you want to be for actual measurement but a good rule of thumb is .0035 to .0045 the lower being for 400-600whp and the higher being for 600+ IMO
