I have 149,000 on my tranny it shifts great. I got the car used though so I do not know if they been changed or what. What makes syncros go out easily? Hp,grinding or what

wait this is on you're ITR?
Damn, you must have a bad box or something, because the stock boxes pretty much never break.
How much power are you making? I'm making anywhere from 350-450 depending on boost with no problems and theres a guy around here running 700whp on slicks with no problem.

this is box #4 that broke on me now. they just cant take the abuse. it seems to happen with loss of traction. when they break loose like crazy and i try and shift if gets a slight grind, then its all down hill from there

ITR gearboxes are known to have problems with 3rd gear synchro. Anything that gets spun so high, oe driven hard, is going to.

I was talking to an older dude today, 45 y/old, career machinist, and he was telling me about some guy up in .ca who machined custom gears for Honda transmissions, and the .ca guy claims they are nearly bulletproof. I'll ask him for contact info, the prices were steep because the guy won't sell just parts and labor + shipping to/from .ca w/ GST is hefty.

I had to go to three dealerships to get synchromesh and when i found it it was $12/qt. Next time I'm buying online by the case, only $6/qt. that way.
Just curious...for your previous rebuilds were you buying synchros from the dealership? How much was the 3rd/4th synchro set running you?
I rebuilt my third transmission this weekend, and I too am getting sick of it.

Re: (itr206)
Just a fyi, it is driver error why we all have grinding in 3rd gear.
Synchromesh doesn't do ****.
I hate this problem too, my 3rd is about to go on me also. Tired of R/R trannies.

I thought the same thing until I tried it. It has truly made me a believer. After a fresh set of bearings, seals, and oil guides I added Synchromesh. The 3rd/4th grind that was near impossible to avoid has all but disappeared.

Re: (DaX)
I seem to remember there is a shop up here making straight cut gears with dogs for one of the integra trannies. That's a wonderful way to avoid synchro problems - remove them completely and use dog engagement. It's not friendly to drive on the street.
If you were to send your box up to Canada don't forget the $CAD is cheaper than $USD and I believe you can apply to get the GST back.
For your existing synchros just blindly getting them cryotreated is unlikely to solve your problem. You should find out what they're made out of. Find out if they're standard with any other trannies - often times a good tranny shop/machinist can make/match a more heavy duty part and make it work. If you're stuck working with the stock piece then you should determine how they're failing. If they're shattering then cryotreating definitely won't help!
By your description it almost sounds like the part itself failed suddenly ie broke. This would make me wonder if it's already hardened too much in stock form.
