remeber it is a floating bearing meaning that it relies on oil as a cushion in the bearings. if it doesnt hit anything, i would bench prime it and see if it goes away. If it firms up, i think that you will be okay to run it in your car.

The shaft is going to move a little. The only way to really measure it is on a machine that can put it under load and take measurements- obviously something the normal person doesn't have readily available. Typically, as long as you can't move it enough to touch the housing, you're olay. Is the housing scorred at all? If not, then you should be okay- that would mean the previous owner had no problems with it. Unfortunately unless you take it to a turbo shop, the only way to REALLY find out is by putting it in the car. GL

I would get it rebuilt. I put in a used turbo with the same type of play that you are talking about and the bearings burned the first time I boosted. The turbo was getting oil and everything was installed correctly, you just never know with a used turbo. Did you know the owner, or was this an Ebay transaction?

You can always prime it (with oil), and use your air compressor tool to force air through the turbine inlet.

it should give you a pretty good idea if it's trashed or not.
