Default Filters on Compressor

Ok, some turbo setups I see look like this. This setup has no air filter coming from the compressor. (It is the first pic down on this URL)

BUT, then I see some setups with an air filter that goes to the compressor. WHY!?
Here is the URL for the setup WITH the filter to the compressor. (It is the pic that says "boosted engine bay")

Never run without an air filter on the street. Put it this way, the turbo blade is spinning over 70k rpm, what do yu think would happened if a rock got in there? Some people take them of at the tracks for better airflow.

I know a few people that take them off at the track...any real gains...is it worth the risk of messing up the turbo?
