After intercooler, Speedometer died and check engine light went on.
The only change I've made to my car is installing the intercooler. It was running fine yesterday, and then all of the sudden when I was on the highway, the speedometer died and just dropped to zero. I didn't hear any odd noise or smell, and the car runs the same. Fuse maybe, I might have loosened some sensor? anyone have any insight to this? I'm at work right now, so i can't check the car.
speedo is controlled by the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). the VSS is located on the tranny near the top, or at the rear of the tranny against the firewall (i forget which). the intercooler shouldnt have anything to do with it, the VSS just craps out sometimes. i think newer ones have a plastic gear mesh that goes down into the tranny to measure speed. its made of plastic so it gets destroyed in the event something isint lining up. sometimes they just wear out.
how many miles on the car? when was the last time you changed tranny fluid? and how often do you change it?

I have about 44000 mi on the car, and I haven't changed the tranny fluid since 30,000mi. thanks for the info
I've seen about four similar cases where the speedo's die or act kinda crazy sometimes, what i did to fix all four of these was i took the three pin connector of the VSS and the middle pin is always corroded hardcore, if you find a sharp pointed object to scrape the green crap of that middle terminal or whatever terminal is corroded then spray some of that corrosion fighter spray found at your local parts store, reconnect connectore, then pull out the 7.5A fuse in the underhood fuse box that says "Back-up" for at least 5 seconds then put it back in (this resets your ecu) take it out for a spin see if it works, It is really stuburn to clean and it has to be really clean to work, If thats not it then you could have a broken Vehicle speed sensor or a short or open in the ground wire but thats a rare occasion. hope this helps let us know.
