ACCIDENTLY OVERTORQUED HSTUDS
what could possibly happen if i over torqued the headstuds
btw: it was only for about an hour that they were over torqued. engine was never turned on. realized then loosened them

Perfectly fine!!! I torque mine to 81 ft-lbs with moly lube more than specs. I learned this from Golden Eagle and found out most of the big horsepower guys also torque them down this much. You will be fine. My motor has been torqued to 81 ft-lbs for a year or more now!

if you really overtorque them the threads will stretch beyond their elastic limit and cease to provide you with the 'holding power'..

Hmm, probally stretched out the studs, I don't even think it's worth the risk of re-using them, you might as well just shell out the extra $90.

check the manufacturer of the bolt. They'll tell you what a safe tolerance for stretch would be. ARP being the stretch-***** they are - they say to toss em at anything over 0.1". But damn...140ft/lbs. Just out of curiosity - when you had to use an 11ft breakerbar to get them that tight and your head started to warp up like a pinched sandwitch - did it ever click that something was wrong?

i thought arp's were good for like 190,000psi tensile strength or sumn like that?
you would think the block or the head would've been affected first huh?

I don't know what ARP states their tensile strength is - but I've yet to see any bolt survive severe overtorquing. Especially DOUBLE what they're suggested at. $90 studs would be amazing if that's all that's damaged. I'll place a wager on the head also, at the very least. Just waiting to see the post creator come back and say "hey guys - all the bolts feel really loose when I started loosening them. I'm gonna take em all out, then let you know how it went." Then come back and post a pic with a handfull of bolt heads. Fun times. Live and learn.

lol.. yea you need new headstuds. Also, goto a machine shop, have them finish this assembly for you. I would have you install a wiper blade on my car.

Damn guys! Leave the guy alone! He came on here for help!!! I dunno how he overtorqued it by that much BUT it happen, now I am sure he feels really bad and thinking he may have screwed something up! And he came on here for advice. Don't slam him further! ****! Good luck man, I think the head studs are done with that much overtorque on them. Make sure when you pull them out that the thread holes are clean, take some compressed air and clean it out good, make sure you don't have you rthreads all jacked up too. Maybe have a machine shop look at it for you. Good luck bro!
