83mm vs 84mm
anyone wanna help me decide, pro's and cons on a sleeve set up.
right now the only thing that i can think of is that i can get a shelf 84mm piston, an 83 is hard to find, and might have to pay extra to have it made.
its for a b16 block. will the walls on the 84mm be dangeriously thin?

Nahh, most sleeving companies REQUEST that you don't go over 84~84.5mm bore for F/I. They're plenty strong. You can bore you for N/A purposes to 86~87mm, so 84mm on F/I is A-OK
here's my take on it...
sleeve it smaller, that way you have more room to **** up, just in case, you can just bore it out, and a set of pistons, you'll be set...
but on the other hand, sleeved block are tough and it'll be hard to damage it with proper tuning and etc....
go with 84mm, cheaper for the shelf pistons...
mine is at 81.5mm, I still like to have a lil more room for error, plus keeping it simple and cheap

84mm pistons are not a problem with most company's sleeves. However you can rebore the motor more times with the 83mm pistons if you mess up the cylinder walls.
I think you should keep the bore smaller. Lets you use the block more if you hurt parts. Also its only nature that a thicker sleeve is gonna be stronger and hold more boost. You can make up for bore size by running more boost. Its not an all motor car.
NYb16, I am in the same boat as you. I am about to build my spare b16. I am going with 84mm because it easier to find pistons that size. Did you get the darton closed deck sleeve kit?
I would go with 83mm as well. If I don't sell the engine below, I may be selling my

Most companys can have any pistons made.
I use Arias because because they dont charge you extra for a custom piston. It however just takes a little longer.
let me know if you need Arias pistons, I'll have them for you in 3-4 weeks at no extra charge then shelf item pistons.

83mm the most room to play with?
Depends on how many times you think you're gonna blow/ hurt your cylinder walls. Darton recommends max bore for boost at 85mm. I got 84.5mm's. .5mm = .020; which is 1 standard re-bore. If you plan on blowing your motor 2 times before reaching your limit, then I would get 83.5 or 84...but if you don't (I don't), I don't see any reason to start with 84.5. Even if you do your hurt walls after an 85mm rebore, you can individually replace the sleeves....I honestly don't see any advantage to starting with 83 or even 83.5. If they make a shelf 83.5mm that would be a cheaper route, but I don't see that on JE's site.

hmmm, a very interesting view point, i hope i NEVER blow my engine, but id like the piece of mind that knowing i can get plenty of re-bores with an 83mm

Even if you still have .020" to go before the block is messed up sometimes when the motor goes up it will mess up the cylinder sleeves deeper than .5 mm can fix.
