Default 3" FMIC core on 2g CRX without cutting?

After searching through as many threads as I could find, I'm still not sure on how I should proceed with an FMIC application on my 90 CRX.

It looks like the majority of FMICs out there are 3" thick. Sounds good to me.
- But when I measured the volume available between my bumper and radiator (after I removed my AC condensor and AC lines), it looks like I would only have 2" available. If I removed my 3 bumper supports then I can see getting by with a 3" core. But I'm hoping that I won't have to resort to this.

So my question:
For you guys running 3" FMICs on your 2g CRXs, how did you deal with the bumper supports getting in the way?
(I searched but didn't find any hard data on 2g CRX setups)

Thanks guys for any tips/info

If your sticking to an oem bumper cover (which it sounds like) you will have to remove material from the inside of the cover. This will open up the available space between your front rad support and the bumper cover.

Ahhh, so most guys are positioning their FMIC between the bumper and bumper support, and NOT between supports and rad? I didn't even measure that space, hmm.

Yes, I'm using a stock CRX bumper

Of course, my preference would be to not remove any material (either bumper plastic or rad supports). Maybe I should just stick with a 2" core?
thx

Yep, most FMIC I have ever seen are mounted just ahead of the front support and just behind the plastic bumper cover. If you use a 4" to 6" tall core you should be able to mount it just below the bumper core (so you do not have to remove it) and it will gather air flow from the oem lower grill opening.

I just fitted a FMIC 22x8x3 into a 1995 Civic and I did not have to trim much at all from the bumper cover. In fact the grill fins are still in place.
I would not remove any of the radiator support (front support), but trimming the bumper cover alittle is no big deal.

Great info -- thanks SLPR
I'll pull my bumper tonight and take measurements. I'm thinking of going with the johnnyracecar.com 5-inch FMIC...feedback?
Setup is Greddy kit on ZC-CRX

Thx

Even with a 2" core or Tyrus's 5" you will still need to cut A LOT. Just warning you, there is a lot of cutting that has to be done if you want to use a large IC, there is really no room if you dont cut anything. But if you do cut A LOT of stuff it could come out like...

How the heck do you guys get enough cool air to the radiator that way? I had my starion intercooler infront of my 92-95 radiator in my crx that way, and it would always overheat on the highway. Moved it over to the right side so the airpath always has a straight shot to the rad, and it's more or less okay now. Maybe you guys don't have to deal with ~115 daily temps? hehe

Notice the hood being off, I'm still battling more efficient ways to cool it. Redline watter wetter and fan always on right now, I need to get a PWR radiator that fits better for a more direct air flow.

Thanks for the straight-up info and pics Beta13.

I don't plan on boosting high PSI levels, so I will most likely only need a smaller FMIC. What about the Greddy small fmic...do you guys know if this particular ic will require bumper cutting?

Or can you recommend any other FMICs (new/aftermarket or OEM from other cars) that minimize or eliminate the need for cutting?

Thanks a lot for all the posts...keep em coming
