Hondata 101

Lately I have been receiving a lot of questions about Hondata, so I figured this post may be well received. Most of the questions revolve around a central theme, what is hondata, and which one do I need?

There are 3 different Hondata systems available, all with different options.

<u>S200 -- http://www.hondata.com/s200.html</u>

Follow the link to learn more about the S200 on Hondata’s website. The S200 is Hondata’s flagship standalone. It offers the most options and is the most versatile. The base S200 allows the user to tune their car to maximize performance. The following options are available:

3 step rev limiter (standard with S200) – User adjustable (through the ROM editor), allows 3 rev limits to be set. This is particularly useful for drag racers. One rev limit can be set for launch (hold down the gas, revs held at preset level), another for full throttle shift (you do not have to lift off the gas while shifting), and an overall rev limit.

Boost option (Optional – Required for cars running forced induction) – Allows you to run a turbo or supercharger in your Honda. More details: http://hondata.com/featuresboost.html

Datalogging (Optional) – This option displays the output of the engine’s sensors in a numeric or graphic format on your laptop. The connection is made from the hondata “blue box:” to your laptop through a serial cable. This option is not only fun to watch, but also helpful in tuning. True life example: My good friend farnsrocket was having some troubles with his TPS voltage after having his TB bored and the TPS sensor reinstalled. The car was stuttering badly at low RPM. Using the datalogging he determined that the TPS voltage was to blame. At 0% throttle the sensor was not reading the correct voltage. He hooked up his Hondata datalogging and was able to adjust the sensor and fix the stuttering.

ROM editor V3 (Optional – Requires Datalogging option) – This option is the software that allows you to tune your own Hondata, and other Hondatas. The S200 can tune the stage 2/3/4 systems, but the stage 2/3/4 cannot tune the S200. In order to “burn” your ROM you will need the pocket programmer. I will talk about that later.

<u>S100 -- http://hondata.com/s100.html</u>

Again, follow the link to learn more about the S100 on Hondata’s website. The S100 offers the same degree of tuning as the base S200 system. The difference is in the hardware and the options available. The entire S100 system is contained within your OBD1 ECU. There is no blue box, no wiring outside the ECU.

The S100 offers fewer options than the S200. The S100 is available in 2 flavors: S100 NA and S100 B (Boost). You cannot add the 3 step rev limiter, datalogging or the ROM editor to the S100 system. To run any or all of these options you need the S200 system.

The S100 system is designed for those users who would like to “set it and forget it” just like the magic rotisserie oven. These systems must be tuned by a dealer or individual with a full S200 system.

<u>Stage2/3/4 -- http://www.hondata.com/stage234.html</u>

Link above for more info. The stage 2/3/4 systems are only recommended for those who cannot run either the S100 or S200. “It is recommended to use the s200 rather than the Stage 2/3/4 system unless the ECU requires the use of the Stage 2/3/4 system (PR3, PW0 or automatic ECUs).” The stage 2/3/4 systems have options similar to the S200 system.

Stage 2/2b – The b denotes the boost option. The stage 2/2b is equivalent to the S100/S100b respectively.

Stage 3/3b – The stage 3/3b includes the base stage 2/2b system and adds shift light (user programmable) VTEC control, 3 step rev limiter.

Stage 4/4b – The stage 4/4b includes the stage 3/3b system and adds the datalogging option and the ROM editor.

<u>OBD Issues and Accessories</u>

Hondata requires the use of an OBD1 ECU, using OBD2 ECUs is cost prohibitive. If you own an OBD1 car you are ready to roll. However, if you own an OBD2 car you must convert to OBD1. This is not as difficult as most people make it out to be. It requires 2 items. 1. A compatible OBD1 ECU (http://hondata.com/ecuswapguide.html). Visit the link, click on the year of your car and see what ECUs are compatible. 2. You need an OBD2 to OBD1 conversion harness. These are available from Hondata, most performance shops and several HT members make and sell them. That’s it. You do not need to rewire your motor or get a different distributor.

OBD1 or 2 you will have to modify your ECU. This can be done yourself with soldering equipment, by a Hondata dealer, or by Hondata themselves. I will not go into details here but basically a socket for the ROM is installed. On occasion Hondata has prepped P28 ECUs for sale; however, last time I asked they did not have any.

Pocket Programmer – I told you I would bring it back up. The pocket programmer is the hardware that allows you to do 2 things. 1. Burn your ROM. 2. Use your emulator to tune “on the fly.” What the hell does that mean? The ROM is a computer chip that stores your tune. The ROM is about the size of a half a stick of gum and is rewritable. The emulator is a connection between the pocket programmer and that socket installed in your ECU. The emulator allows the tuner to make real time adjustments to the tune. Once you (or your tuner) has finished tuning it is time to burn the ROM so that you do not have to have your laptop, pocket programmer and emulator hooked up. To burn the ROM you disconnect the emulator from your pocket programmer and insert the ROM into the pocket programmer. You download your tune to the ROM, then insert the ROM in the socket in your ECU. You are ready to go.

3 BAR MAP sensor – If you are or are planning on running over 11 psi you need a different MAP sensor. The OEM Honda MAP sensor will not work. Pick up a 3 BAR GM MAP sensor from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com PN: 16040749

I’ll post more later, it is 2:30 AM.

I got a question. If i buy the hondata s100 system from a seller over the internet(i.e 2K TEG, vaportrail, etc) i would have to send a obd-I ecu so they could put the chip it or do they send me the chip and i modify the ecu myself.

If you are comfortable doing it yourself you can. Otherwise whoever you buy it from should be able to take care of that for you. I cannot speak for all the Hondata dealers. I have heard stories of guys talking radio shack employees into doing it. You just have to buy the soldering iron, or buy somehting.

obd0 must convert to obd1. So read what to do for obd2, and pretend it says obd0

damn, this is a great tech article. for you and strippers from someone else! Someone should look into putting another forum on the board for a FAQ with great tech articles like this in it. That way when you search the most popular questions will come up for easy finding later. Just a thought. And you could make it that that is the only place newbies can go into for their first session or first day or whatever so they can't just join and ask a question without searching that has been answered 7 billion times.

I am working on part 2, should be done tonight or tomorrow.

The S200 price hasn't changed (that I am aware of), they did bring out the S100 and that is less expensive than the S200.

hey do those GM 3 bar MAPs really work with the Hondata?

i was gonna go pick one up but i heard that alot of them don't work with the Hondata system. was this said because most people get the wrong sensor or because you really need the Hondata 3 bar MAP sensor?

BTW nice post 2K_TEG!

I have a question. With S100 if I go with a different setup and have to reprogram do they have to take the ecu out and the chip? How does that work?
