Default 1/4 Runs, Who has to shift to 5th? :Suxors:

hey guys, i'm running a GSR tranny and having to shift to 5th by the end of the quarter. It really sucks coz it seems to fall on it's face.

Trapping 110mph
BFG 235x60x14's with 12psi in the tires

It was nailing the rev limiter right at the finish line so i bumped it from 7200 to 7400 to get across the line but as it cools down temp wise, i start hitting it again. I'm not confident in my stock head to turn up the rev limiter any more so i called it quits.

Does anyone else use 5th gear in the quarter around here or what?

What motor are you running and why are you reving it so low?

Lots of people shift to 5th. If you don't, you just have to change the tranny, the tire, or raise the rev limit to stay in 4th.

it's just an ls motor with a forged bottom end.

The BFG's are 24inch's i'm not going any bigger coz i don't wanna break anything, i've snapped 3 axles in the last 2 weeks. I need to practice preloading.

back to the topic, i was under the assumption that most of you guys finish at the top of 4th, or at least that was the way that it was best to get everything setup due to 5th gear being kinda crappy.

I took a b17 tranny and put a circuit works ring gear and pinion in it. I reved it to 7300 rpm and tapped the rev limiter in 5th gear at 130 mph with a 26in slick. It sucked at highway speeds, but 3rd gear burnouts were fun

spin it higher or go with a taller tire. shifting to 5th kills your mph.

I'd love to, i'm just don't think i can trust a stock ls head to return the valves fast enough at those kinda rpm's.

I think you should just use a B2D adapter and up the boost

If you look at the numbers, its better to gear it to end the 1/4 in 4th than shift. The more torque you have, the less need there is to shift. Some very fast V8's/turbo I6's use the 2spd auto Powerglide transmissions... Low and Drive, then R for RAAAAce.

Take your options and choose the best one you can afford:

VTEC
Bigger tires
Different Tranny

Or just race in the 1/8 mile with the pee-wee rails.

I guess i kinda knew what my options were but didn't wanna believe them. The situation is this. I'm in the process of building another motor. I've got a vtec head that i've ported & polished with all titanium hardware but i'm holding off because i feel that i'm probably going to max out the block that i've got in the car. I mean it's got wiseco's & eagles in it but i'm not trusting the sleeves. So i'm planning ot send out my extra block flor sleeving next month and then i wanna stick the vtec head on the sleeved block & get that all ready for next season. So i might just have to live with what i've got right now. I just really wanna try and make an 11sec pass on what i've got in the car right now & i think it's possible if i get to run the car at night time with a little more timming adjustments.

Setup: 9.5:1
Garrett t3/t4 .60/.63
Home Made Top Mount with all mandrel bent pipes

talk about long tranny's.....i have a stock S1 old school cable tranny, i never shift!!

ive never run at the track so im not sure how it would act, but 3rd gear goes to 100-105mph@8484rpm/and fourth gear goes to 135mph@8484rpm-- its silly i am yet to pull through 5th but i still have power, my 17 year old car is too scary, i need alot more brake/suspension upgrades or maybe a new car for those speeds

i would compare to you but im too embarrassed to run at the track with my open diff dog-leggin down the track, but if you wanna fix your shifting too much problem, pick up my tranny!!! lol

I don't think you will break into the 11's with a 110 trap speed. Rev the head a little higher see what it can take.

I was planning to turn the boost up another 6psi or so to accomplish this!

I was only runnin about 14psi from my .60/.63 (it was about 98 degrees out durring the day when i ran the 12.6, i'd also try to brake into 11's while it was night time and much cooler out.)

Get some springs and retainers in there so you will trust it to run higher than 7500rpm at least OR go to a STOCK VTEC head on it

this thing seems to fall on it's face at 7k (due to the cam's i'm assuming). I really do appreciate your input tho boostfed

Like i said earlier, i'm gonna save my vtec head for the block thats in progress. If i have to deal with what i've got till the end of the season, then i'll be alright with that i guess. Only think i can come up with to get my times down is to launch harder and up the boost to make 5th even worth using. I'd rather not alter the setup to much at this point knowing that i've got a sleeved block on the way, but i know that if i'm running out of gear, i'm holding my self back.

Do you have springs and retainers in the head? If so try revving it alittle higher JUST in 4th gear see if it improves at all, it may just fall on its face and not improve at all. It is worth a try

naa the head is completely stock. When i forged the bottom end 2 years ago i had the head apart, did a mild port & polish job on it, had a valve job done on it & it's only had 6k miles on it since. All springs & retainers were in great shape, but are still stock.

I had the rev limit set to 7200 at first & then i needed just a little more to get across the finish line (was hitting the limiter at the line) so i bumped it to 7400 and that helped, but the temps changed 8 degrees out and all the sudden i was hitting the limiter again while trapping another 2mph. I'm kinda curious what it does if i run the car in 70 degree weather instead of 95 degree weather!
