Default ~ B17 build? ~

i was thinking about building a B17 for turbo. just want to do rods, pistons, valve springs and retainers. the problem i am running into is i really dont see anyone who makes rods for a B17, are they the same as a B18 or B16 or something? i know the stroke is different so i dont think they are the same as any other B-series.

also as far as i know i could use any pistons just as long as the bore is right, correct? whats a good compression to run? can anyone recommend some rods, pistons, valve springs and retainers? looking for a good deal!

if anyone has any good info on this i would appreciate it, thanks!

The only problem with that is the b17 is exactly identical to the gen1/gen2 b16, but the rod length is slightly longer than the b16, and slightly shorter than the b18-b18c. Here's a comparison of the specs. BY THE WAY YOU ALL SHOULD BOOKMARK THIS PAGE!!!

its actually shorter than a b16 rod. Check out the specs page

My bad, it's shorter than the b16, but ask around, I'm sure you could get away with using a b16 rod, with a custom piston. I'm sure someone has done it, or just go ls/vtec turbo.......... Ls/b18 blocks go for around $150 on ebay and locally in my area.(complete).

I think they are the only people who make forged rods for the b17.

just use stock rods and arp bolts, like $50 bucks.

i run a build b17t, i use the crower rods they are the only rods i know of the for the b17. As for pistons you can use any b16 piston...i use wiseco 9:1; you may also be able to use b18 but i dont know 100%

The block is identical to the b16 block, same cast- not sure about the head cast i think its the same as b16 as well (PR3)

i am not dick-cheese! i have to gather information on this before i jump into it.

a buddy found this out for me......

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by rjay8604 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Hi, I use the b17 crank. I would recommend just getting your pistons a little customized since you are gonna get pistons anyway. The b17 rods are 5.208" and the b16 rods are 5.290", simply by having the pistons compression height reduced by .082" will allow affordable rods from the common companies and also a better rod/stroke ratio. Its a win/win/win situation. </TD></TR></TABLE>

from this thread ~ b17 connecting rods question

i have a set of Crower forged billet B16 rods already. so now the question is where can i get these custom pistons from and whats the cost. do i have to use forged pistons or can i use cast? whats the pro's and con's? not looking to spend life savings on this!

You would have to call around to ask piston manufacturers what the cost would be. Dont bother with cast pistons.........it wouldn't be worth the time to buy new ones and you will not be able to push them as much as their forged counterparts. The gen consensus wrt cr is that 9:1 is pretty much the best cr. If I were buying pistons my top choices would be wiseco (these will be in my next build as I have a spare set of them), cp and endyn. There are many threads about which piston is best. Enough threads to make your head spin, but from what I have seen the most widely used pistons here on h-t are wiseco and cp. GL.

or could i run a head-gasket thick enough to run the B16 rods with the B17 crank and B17 or B16 pistons, the pistons are the same size. if i could use a thick enough head-gasket to make the clearance then there would be no need for custom pistons.

anyone know how thick an OEM Honda head-gasket is? how much thicker would i need? i see the ones on inlinepro but damn, 300 for a head-gasket! i might as well get custom pistons, when you look at paying for pistons plus that head-gasket.

A stock honda hg is .030" thick. For every .040" you would theoretically lower the cr by 1 pt. Cometic makes hg as thick as .120". But I don't think that you would want to run one of those in a boosted car. They have a .074" which should lower the cr about 1 pt. They usually cost anywhere from $80-$120 depending on where you get it from. GL.

well i just got a quote on some custom Wiseco pistons for 595. so i dont really know what i would be better off doing. seems like the head-gasket would be easier and i wouldnt have to wait for custom pistons to be made.

how would i know the exact head-gasket thickness i would need to make this work? would it be 0.112"? would the piston be coming out of the cylinder a little?

why are you lookin for custom pistons again? so that you can run b16 rods while maintaining the same stroke as the b17??

yes

may have found a B18 GSR block though!

that sounds like the easiest route.
